SK Telecom Supports Commercialization of 5G "Beat" Ideas

SK Telecom is actively supporting developers and venture companies in commercializing their 5G technology-based ideas to create a second Pokémon Go.
SK Telecom (CEO Jang Dong-hyun) announced on the 20th that it will hold the '5G Realistic Media & Convergence Service Contest' together with Unity Korea, a global multi-platform content engine development company, to foster a domestic 5G ecosystem.
This contest focuses on realistic media and intelligent convergence services, and proposals can be submitted freely even if they do not fall into these two areas.
Those who wish to participate will be provided with free training on 'Introduction to 5G Technology and Application Cases' and 'Creating Realistic Media Using the Unity Engine' on August 8th, and contest participants (teams) must submit their ideas to the 'T Developers' website (https://developers.sktelecom.com) by August 26th.
Participants will undergo a written review and competitive presentation, and the final six teams will be selected in early September: three teams from the general public and college students (idea category) and three teams from development companies. Of the six finalists, the three development companies will receive a total of 500 million won in development funding and coaching from SK Telecom, enabling them to pursue product development over the next six months. If necessary, we will review the possibility of commercialization through linkage with SK Telecom's mutual cooperation program.
This contest is sponsored by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning's Giga Korea* project, and aims to present service ideas that can create new value in real life by utilizing the ultra-high speed and ultra-low latency characteristics of 5G networks.
A total of 500 million won in development funds will be awarded to small and medium-sized/venture companies that win awards in the service development sector.
SK Telecom is conducting R&D on core technologies in the fields of realistic media and intelligent convergence services, such as 'T real' for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) services and 'ThingPlug' for IoT, and plans to make these technologies available for use in the contest.
Unity Korea CEO Kim In-sook said, “This contest is open to a wide range of participants, including developers, venture companies, college students, and the general public, so we look forward to many participants and creative ideas.”
SK Telecom's General Technology Research Center Director Choi Jin-seong said, "As a platform operator, SK Telecom will continue to foster an ecosystem where various products and services can be gathered on top of the 5G network, and take the lead in creating new customer value."
