Ericsson commercialized commercial 5G NR technology supporting Massive MIMO in 2017

Ericsson is developing the world's first commercial 5G NR technology supporting Massive MIMO and plans to commercialize it in 2017. Along with the 5G Plug-in announced earlier in June and the wireless system baseband 5216 currently being used in wireless testbeds, Ericsson is showcasing all components of a 5G network for the first time.
The AIR 6468 supports 5G technologies such as beamforming, Massive MIMO, and Multi-User MIMO (MU-MIMO) by connecting high-performance antennas and multiple operable ports. Through these technologies, the user experience is improved, network capacity and coverage are expanded, and interference is further reduced. The newly introduced radio supports LTE technology, allowing it to be used on current networks.
A number of Ericsson wireless system products supporting key 5G requirements for application to current networks are awaiting release.
Peter Jarich, Vice President of Customer and Infrastructure Services at Current Analysis, said, “Today’s mobile operators are focusing on the commercialization of 5G networks while also continuing to invest in existing LTE networks. “Ericsson’s new portfolio, consisting of new 5G wireless and LTE products that reflect the core concepts of 5G—small cells, licensed-unlicensed band combinations, cloud LAN, network densification, and spectrum optimization—and the innovation of Ericsson Wireless Systems stand out,” he said.
To support new networks, Ericsson has developed the industry's first innovative Industrialized Network Rollout Services solution. By combining a network configuration and installation platform with Ericsson's innovative processes, the entire process—from configuration, installation, integration, and shakedown to service transfer—can be completed in a single site visit.
Arun Bansal, General Manager of Ericsson’s Network Business Unit, said, “Ericsson has led innovation across every generation of mobile technology, and now we will introduce technologies that are even more innovative than we promised. We will unveil new hardware for the 5G plug-ins announced in June, which will enable mobile operators to install 5G infrastructure. Furthermore, based on technologies evolving toward 5G, we plan to introduce innovations that can enhance the performance and efficiency of existing networks.”

Maxim Launches MIMO Linearizer to Reduce RF Front-end Size
Maxim Integrated Products Korea (CEO Kim Hyun-sik) has announced the SC2200, a dual-path radio frequency power amplifier linearizer (RFPAL). Design engineers can use the SC2200 to reduce power consumption and cost while shrinking the size of the radio frequency (RF) front-end. The Maxim SC2200 linearizer consumes up to 70% less power than a 37dBm power amplifier operating at back-off. Compared to Digital Pre-Distortion (DPD) solutions, the bill of materials cost is up to 50% cheaper and the size is up to 8 times smaller.

LG Uplus Develops and Commercializes Multi-band MIMO Repeater with SMEs
LG U+ announced on the 25th that it will jointly develop a new repeater with Samji Electronics that supports MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) services across three frequency bands, with commercialization scheduled for the end of August. *MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output): An antenna system capable of multiple input and output. By increasing base station and mobile phone antennas to two or more, data is transmitted through multiple paths, enabling data speeds twice higher than existing systems. Conventionally, separate RRH (Remote Radio Head) base stations had to be installed for each frequency band. The multi-band repeater developed this time is characterized by the ability to support antennas across three frequency bands with a single repeater unit, enabling substantial cost reduction in network construction and operation expenses.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
