mWSaver™ Technology, minimum power consumption with up to 35W auxiliary power
Exceeding the strictest standby power regulations

The energy saving requirements of the 2013 EU Ecodesign Directive ERP (Energy-related Products) Lot 6 set the maximum power consumption of electronic products in standby mode to less than 0.5W. This requirement leaves a significant challenge in the design of auxiliary power supplies for applications such as PCs, game consoles, and LED TVs.

Fairchild Semiconductor, a leading global supplier of high-performance power and mobile products, has introduced the AC regulator FSB series, a next-generation Green Mode Fairchild Power Switch (FPS™), to meet the challenge of designers requiring standby power consumption of 0.5W or less. FSB series components, featuring Fairchild’s mWSaver™ technology, enable compliance with all global standby guidelines while significantly reducing standby and no-load power consumption.

The FSB series integrates an advanced current mode pulse width modulator (PWM) and a powerful avalanche-rugged 700VSenseFET into a single package solution, enabling high standby energy efficiency, miniaturization, improved reliability, and reduced system costs compared to previous solutions in auxiliary power designs.

One of mWSaver's technologies, the innovative AX-CAP™ method, minimizes losses in the EMI filter stage by eliminating the X-CAP discharge resistor while meeting IEC61010-1 safety requirements. The mWSaver technology Green Mode feature provides off-time modulation that linearly reduces the switching frequency under low load conditions to minimize switching losses. Combined with very low operating current, the FSB series easily meets and exceeds the limits of low power consumption.

Integrated protection features include programmable current limiting, internal open-loop protection, built-in Brown input/output protection, high and low line compensation for constant power limiting, hysteresis overtemperature protection, voltage lock-up, and overvoltage protection. The FSB-series offers integrated MOSFETs of different current ratings to support up to 35W. The first product released in the lineup is the FSB127H with a 2A internal MOSFET. It is available in an 8-pin dual in-line package.
