– Analog Devices ( www.analog.com ), a global specialist in data converters for signal processing and high-performance semiconductors, announced today that U.S. medical device manufacturer Zoll Medical Corp. has adopted Analog Devices’ high-performance iMEMS® technology to implement its portable cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) device, ‘PocketCPR®’.

ADI's digital iMEMS accelerometer converts the movements of the palm-sized 'PocketCPR' into real-time measurement data to accurately read the speed and depth of CRP chest compressions. This enables rescue personnel to maintain the correct chest compression force and frequency recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA) during emergencies. Mark Totman, President of Bio-Detek, a wholly owned subsidiary of Zoll Medical that develops and manufactures Pocket CPR, emphasized, “We were able to achieve our goal of developing a compact CPR device at an affordable price ($149 USD) through Analog Devices’ MEMS technology. Many people hesitate to perform CPR due to a lack of relevant training or confidence, but through Pocket CPR, they will be able to get the help they need in emergency situations.”

PocketCPR uses ADI's digital iMEMS accelerometer to provide the user with a notification message during operation to maintain a compression depth of 1.5 to 2 inches, as recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). In addition, notifications such as "Push Harder" or "Good Compressions" appear depending on the compression depth. Furthermore, it is equipped with a metronome to help users maintain an appropriate compression speed.

The 'PocketCPR' is equipped with Analog Devices' ADXL322 iMEMS Low g high-performance accelerometer featuring a signal conditioning voltage output. Operating at 2.7VDC, this accelerometer is only 340μA (average).
