Quantum Announces Cost-Effective Tape Backup and Archiving Storage

Quantum (CEO Kang-Wook Lee) announced the launch of the Scalar® storage platform, a tape backup and archiving storage optimized for storing and managing the growing amount of unstructured data.
Along with this, the company announced the Scalar i6 and Scalar i3 tape libraries, which are tailored to the size of the enterprise based on the Scalar storage platform, and the StorNext AEL6, an archive appliance optimized for video media work.
The new Scala storage platform delivers the benefits of tape at a higher level. This product delivers the highest storage density with twice the number of rack-mounted libraries compared to the previous generation, helping organizations of all sizes reduce their data center footprint and storage costs.
The new Scala platform is the latest addition to Quantum's multi-tier portfolio for workflows, hybrid flash, object-based cloud, and tape storage, enabling customers to unlock the value of their data in the most effective and cost-effective way.
Tape plays a crucial role in addressing the challenges posed by the growth of unstructured data, providing offline copies to protect against ransomware attacks, supporting data protection, active archiving, or long-term cold storage. As the table below shows, tape offers greater cost efficiency than any other storage medium.
Comparing the cost of storing 1PB over the past three years, tape has a clear advantage.
Provides twice the storage density compared to existing products
The new Scala storage platform delivers the next-level benefits of tape. It boasts the highest storage density, offering twice the number of rack-mounted libraries compared to previous generations, enabling organizations of all sizes to reduce their data center footprint and storage costs. Customers using Quantum's Scala can adopt cloud storage at a fraction of the cost compared to public cloud storage.
Consumer IT is raising expectations for user experiences within data centers. The new Scala platform is a significant advancement, offering features like automated setup, configuration, and management via web services, an intuitive swipe-based local user interface design, and interaction via mobile devices, all of which enhance the user experience through an HTTP-based interface.
Geoff Stedman, senior vice president of product and solutions marketing at Quantum, said, "Tape has traditionally been synonymous with backup, but tape is now being used as an effective storage medium for unstructured data. Cloud-based cold storage, video production, video surveillance, and autonomous vehicle design are all ideal use cases for tape. Databricks Unveils Open AI Security Monitoring 'Lakewatch'
Databricks entered the security market on March 24 by unveiling LakeWatch, an open-source agentic SIEM.
