Linear Technology Korea (CEO Hong Sa-kwak) announced the launch of a new synchronous current mode monolithic buck-boost converter (product name: LTC3119) that supplies a continuous output current of up to 5A in buck mode using various input sources such as single or multi-cell batteries, wall adapters, solar panels, and supercapacitors.

This device supports an input voltage range of 2.5V to 18V, but can operate up to 250mV after startup. The output voltage is controlled to be higher than, lower than, or equal to the input, and can be set from 0.8V to 18V.

User-selectable Burst Mode® operation can reduce quiescent current to 35µA, improving light-load efficiency and thus extending battery life.

The unique 4-switch PWM buck-boost topology integrated into the LTC3119 produces low switching noise and no jitter in all operating modes, making it ideal for RF and precision analog applications sensitive to supply noise. Additionally, this device supports a programmable maximum power point control (MPPC) function to maximize power delivery from high-output impedance power sources or solar cells.

The LTC3119 integrates four N-channel MOSFETs with low RDSON internally, providing up to 95% efficiency. Burst mode operation can be disabled, enabling low-noise continuous switching. When synchronizing using external frequency programming or an internal PLL, it can operate over a wide switching frequency range of 400 kHz to 2 MHz, allowing you to adjust the desired characteristics between efficiency and solution size.

In addition, it provides various features such as short-circuit protection, thermal overload protection, shutdown current of less than 3µA, and a power good indicator. With features such as a small external component, a wide operating temperature range, compact packaging, and low standby current, the LTC3119 is suitable for RF power supplies, high-current pulse load applications, system backup power supplies, and lead-acid batteries for 12V conversion systems.

The LTC3119 is available in thermally enhanced 28-pin 4mm x 5mm QFN and 28-pin TSSOP packages. Grade E and I products are designed to operate over a temperature range of –40°C to 125°C, while Grade H operates from –40°C to 150°C and Grade MP from –55°C to 150°C. Pricing for Grade E starts at $7.15 per unit for both packages in 1,000-unit quantities.
