Freescale Expands High-Performance Acceleration Engine Solutions with QorIQ Platform Boasting Best-in-Class Cost and Power Efficiency
Adoption of high-performance DPAA (Data Path Acceleration Architecture) in the latest P1 and P2 processors, providing cost savings and optimal scalability
August 25, 2010, Seoul — Freescale Semiconductor announced three new QorIQ processors that apply its advanced Data Path Acceleration Architecture (DPAA) programming model for the first time to QorIQ P1 and P2 level multicore products. With the announcement of the P1023/1017 and P2040 communications processors, Freescale DPAA technology has been expanded from single-core to all QorIQ platforms covering 8-cores and operating frequencies from 400 MHz to 2.2 GHz.
By leveraging the common DPAA software architecture, customers can dramatically shorten development cycles by developing code for a single QorIQ processor and then easily scaling it up or down for the entire QorIQ product family. It also enables the development of extremely flexible end products that offer a wide range of price and performance targets.
"With DPAA applied across the entire QorIQ product family, customers can now optimize software investment and reusability by applying software developed for existing QorIQ products to P1 and P2 level QorIQ products," said Preet Virk, Director of Strategic Marketing for Freescale's Networking Processor business unit. "This latest QorIQ product provides the flexibility, scalability, and performance needed to manage increasing IP traffic rates while maintaining a highly competitive price point."
The P1023/P1017 is a highly integrated dual and single-core device, particularly suitable for high-performance 802.11N wireless LAN access points, SMB gateways, and low-cost fixed routers. Key features of this product include low power consumption that meets Power over Ethernet (PoE) requirements, three PCI Express controllers supporting three wireless solutions, datapath load reduction capabilities that optimize the performance of enterprise WLAN access points, and Freescale’s advanced security coprocessor that alleviates the protocol processing load required for encryption algorithms.
The P2040 is a cost-effective, power-optimized quad-core device that delivers market-leading performance and capabilities in solutions such as fixed routers, LTE (Long Term Evolution) channel cards, and enterprise security applications. In addition to featuring DPAA technology to alleviate the load of common packet processing tasks, the P2040 supports flexible SerDes configurations that minimize the required glue logic and includes embedded hypervisor technology that enables true hardware partitioning and virtualization, allowing each core to run its own operating system independently of other cores.
QorIQ DPAA relieves the load of optional tasks on primary processing cores, allowing more critical tasks to be executed on the cores or enabling application performance goals to be achieved at lower frequencies, costs, and power. DPAA consists of a Frame Manager that implements policing, classification, and scheduling on Ethernet ports; a Queue Manager that performs queue management, congestion control, workload distribution, and packet ordering; a Buffer Manager that minimizes memory usage by allocating packets to buffers; a Security Block that implements encryption algorithms; and a Pattern Matching Engine that provides integrated threat management capabilities by searching for text strings in packets.
Freescale provides a single API (Application Programming Interface) to access DPAA, along with a public GUI-based configuration tool and framework application examples for configuring the DPAA infrastructure. DPAA provides near-linear scalability when applying additional cores to tasks.

Development tools
Linux BSP, software development for product families A comprehensive hardware and software development kit is planned, including toolkits and CodeWarrior support technologies. Freescale plans to release a series of reference designs based on the new products in the first and second quarters of 2011.
Supply situation and prices
