Implementation of variable CCT LED lighting with IoT connectivity

ams (Korea branch representative Lee Jong-deok) announced the launch of the AS7221, the industry's first integrated white tunable smart lighting manager.

Lighting manufacturers can now rapidly apply high-precision CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) or 'Kelvin-tuning' functionality to IoT smart lighting products using the AS7221. The AS7221 adopts a multi-functional architecture that includes an I2C expansion interface, enabling it to be utilized as an Internet of Awareness™ IoT sensor hub platform for detecting air quality, temperature, usage status, or object presence.

The AS7221 is the first in the industry to feature an embedded tri-stimulus CIE XYZ color sensor, enabling precise color sensing through direct mapping to the CIE 1931 color space.

As a complete integrated lighting control system, this smart lighting manager operates with standard 0-10V input voltage, and using a complete smart lighting command set, IoT connectivity and network control are also possible through standard clients such as Bluetooth Smart, ZigBee, or WiFi. Since LED control for spectrum tuning is implemented through direct PWM channel output, it provides a high-precision solution that reduces development and integration time compared to larger discrete component methods.

The AS7221 is the first expansion product in the Cognitive Lighting™ smart lighting manager product line recently announced by ams. The AS7221 is provided in a compact 5x5mm LGA package and can be flexibly integrated into both lighting fixtures and large replacement bulbs. This device provides precise color point adjustment capability, enabling smooth CCT conversion control between pre-configured cool/warm white LED strings within the lighting fixture. In addition to color and CCT adjustment functionality, the AS7221 also includes automatic configuration support for ams's TSL4531 illuminance sensor for comprehensive daylight harvesting functionality.
