LG Electronics has won its first public bidding project in the field of energy storage systems (ESS) linked to solar power plants.

LG Electronics has won a contract to build the "Eunhasu Solar Energy Storage System" from Korea Western Power, a power generation subsidiary of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). This project, valued at 2 billion won, will build a 3MWh ESS by the end of March next year to improve power quality at KEPCO's 1.6MW "Eunhasu Solar Power Complex" in Sejong City.

The solar power generation-linked ESS project is a project that supplies electricity of consistent quality (output) using electricity stored in the ESS, even when solar power generation is unstable depending on the weather.

In particular, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced a policy to provide a weighting of 5.0 for the Renewable Energy Certificate (REC)* for electricity that solar power plants charge to ESS during the day (10:00-16:00) and discharge during the rest of the time until 2017, which is expected to contribute to improving the profitability of solar power generation operators. General solar power plants without ESS are usually given a weighting of 0.7 to 1.5 depending on the installation size and location.

LG Electronics possesses a comprehensive solar power-linked ESS solution based on its proprietary technologies, including premium solar modules, power conversion systems (PCS), power management systems (PMS), and batteries. The company plans to establish a standard model for the solar power-linked ESS market, which is expected to rapidly expand.
