SK Telecom Takes Steps to Foster New ICT Ecosystem

SK Telecom announced that it will invest a total of 11 trillion won over three years—5 trillion won for New ICT industrial ecosystem creation and cultivation in collaboration with global leading companies such as Samsung and Nvidia as well as startups, and 6 trillion won for future networks including 5G.
New investment for New ICT ecosystem creation and cultivation will be concentrated in artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, and IoT fields, and will be carried out together with subsidiaries SK Broadband and SK Planet.

SK Telecom plans to expand the scale of the domestic ICT ecosystem through investment and support to create a virtuous cycle where the national economy develops together. To this end, the company will focus on ecosystem building in artificial intelligence and autonomous driving/connected car fields, as well as IoT fields such as smart home and energy management efficiency enhancement. SK Telecom stated that it will fully open the door for cooperation not only to global operators, ventures, and startups but also to competitors. The company will also make efforts to consolidate capabilities from ICT-related affiliates within the SK Group, such as SK C&C and SK Hynix.
SK Telecom will operate an 'IoT Open House.' The 'IoT Open House' will provide total support services from product development to service commercialization, including IoT education and service planning, hardware development, and network integration testing, for developers and startups with ideas.
In addition, support facilities for venture cultivation in the telecommunications infrastructure field will be established. Through a venture incubation center to be established in Seoul in the first half of this year under the 'TIP (Telco Infra Project)' framework being pursued in cooperation with Facebook, Nokia, and Intel, SK Telecom will actively support the discovery and cultivation of domestic startups and their global expansion.
Investment of 11 Trillion Won Over Three Years in 5G Global Technology Standardization and Advanced Technology Development
SK Telecom announced that it plans to invest 6 trillion won by 2019 in future network fields such as 5G and 2.6GHz infrastructure construction. In the wireless mobile communications field, the company will enhance quality through 2.6GHz investment. In the wired communications field, SK Telecom plans to expand giga internet and UHD coverage and develop streaming distribution technology for media services.
President Park Jung-ho stated, "We must build a true New ICT ecosystem through openness and cooperation, not through SK Telecom's efforts alone. Just as memory semiconductors are currently South Korea's economic driving force, I hope the New ICT ecosystem will become a new economic driver, and through this, we will regain global ICT leadership," he added.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
