Fairchild Semiconductor's Smart LED Lamp Driver IC that solves limited board space and dimming design concerns
Solving concerns such as small board space, lifespan, and energy saving
As the popularization of LED lighting continues, particularly in residential lighting, designers are looking for effective dimming solutions (compatible with existing fixtures, etc.). Furthermore, these solutions must operate reliably in a small board space and provide high power efficiency.
To help designers overcome these challenges, Fairchild, a global supplier of high-performance power and mobile products, has developed the FL7701, a smart non-isolated Buck LED driver with PFC functionality. This product utilizes digital technology to generate an internal reference voltage based solely on frequency information, without detecting input line voltage, enabling the achievement of a high power factor. The FL7701 operates even under DC input voltage conditions and automatically switches modes depending on the input voltage state (AC or DC). Conventional MR lamp applications that require additional transformers suffer significant power losses. This inefficient conventional method can now be replaced by the FL7701 solution, which can be connected directly to the AC line.
FL7701, which integrates many functions into a small space, enables designers to reduce BOM by 20% and board space by 60% compared to existing solutions. This product is suitable for applications with limited PCB size and also provides analog dimming capabilities.
FL7701 is designed to operate without any electrolytic capacitors on the drive board, providing the high level of reliability necessary to increase the lamp warranty life from 3 years guaranteed by existing solutions to over 5 years.
Digitally implemented block-based PF (>0.9) and THD, along with energy efficiency reaching 90%, can maximize energy savings for the entire lighting system, and these features built into the FL7701 can meet the strictest standards required by global regulations and standards.
Fairchild’s IC design technology enables high power efficiency (90+) and provides the high level of light quality required for residential lighting. The FL7701, housed in an 8SOP package, is best suited for applications where driver board space is extremely small, such as interior decorative lighting. It can be used in low-power bulb replacement lamps, PAR or MR type downlight lamps, E26/27 screw-socket lamps, or 2-pin GU5.3/GU10 socket lamps.
Fairchild provides total solutions for low-power (<20W), medium-power (20–50W), and high-power (>50W) LED driver applications. Highly integrated PWM and PFC control IC solutions provide high efficiency while reducing component count and simplifying complex designs for small lamp applications. Fairchild offers a diverse product lineup ranging from switching devices to ICs for PFC control, PWM control, and high-voltage gate drivers. Fairchild has developed innovative products that reduce board size, simplify design, and lower system costs while meeting high efficiency and stringent regulations. Meanwhile, Fairchild’s Global Power Resource SM Center operates online tools, FAEs composed of power electronics engineers, and regional centers to support customer designs.
