October 31, 2011 – Intersil, a global leader in the design and production of high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, announced today the launch of an illuminance sensor that has received AEC-Q100 certification from the Automotive Electronics Association. This product is capable of measuring indirect light of 0.01 lux or less, which is close to the spectral response perceived by the human eye.

The ISL76671 is the industry's first low-light sensor capable of operating in automotive environments ranging from -40°C to 105°C, providing reliable performance without external temperature compensation. Along with internal temperature compensation, the sensor offers a fast response time of 30 milliseconds and an excellent infrared (IR) cutoff rate. The light sensor operates at an operating current lower than 4uA on power supplies between 1.8V and 3.0V. Additionally, the voltage output can be directly connected to an ADC without separate buffering.

Available in a small 2.1mm x 2.1mm package, the ISL76671 is a particularly ideal solution for light detection in light-based control applications located inside dark glass or behind plastic bezels that block external light. Its sensitivity to light is very low at 0.01 lux, which ultimately enables excellent performance in dark environments. (For reference, the light of a full moon is generally between 0.25 and 1 lux depending on the position.)
