SK Telecom Accelerates 5G Era with LTE-A Pro Technology

At this year's MWC 2017, SK Telecom will jointly demonstrate ▲ 5-band CA technology with Samsung Electronics ▲ 3-band CA technology using 4x4 multiple antennas, and ▲ 1Gbps unlicensed band frequency aggregation technology with Ericsson.
SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics have successfully demonstrated 5-band CA (Cellular Aggregation) technology, which combines five frequency bands and uses them as a single frequency, on a commercial network.
The CA standard standardized by 3GPP covers up to five frequency bands, and currently, LTE utilizes five-band CA technology. Among domestic mobile carriers, SK Telecom is the only one with access to five frequency bands, enabling it to provide five-band CA services.
SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics have achieved download speeds of up to 900 Mbps on a commercial network by combining 3-band CA technology, which combines three frequency bands, and 4x4 multi-antenna technology.
4x4 multiple-antenna (MIMO) technology is a technology that increases data transmission capacity compared to existing technologies by simultaneously using four antennas for each data transmission and reception. Currently, 2x2 multi-antenna technology is applied, which utilizes two antennas each for data transmission and reception.
Meanwhile, SK Telecom and Ericsson have also successfully demonstrated a 1Gbps speed using Licensed Assisted Access (LAA), an unlicensed spectrum aggregation technology that combines LTE frequencies for mobile communications and Wi-Fi frequencies and transmits them as LTE signals.
In this demonstration, a 20MHz frequency band for LTE and a 60MHz frequency band for Wi-Fi were combined, and 4x4 multi-antenna technology was applied in the LTE frequency band to achieve a speed of up to 1Gbps.
LTE-A Pro technologies, including carrier aggregation (CA), 4x4 MIMO, and unlicensed band spectrum aggregation, are the final LTE technology specifications being developed ahead of 5G mobile communications. SK Telecom expects the commercialization of LTE-A Pro technology to lead to the expansion of immersive multimedia services, such as ultra-high-definition (UHD) video and virtual reality (VR), in the 5G era.

SK Telecom Partners with Nokia for Quantum Cryptography at MWC
SK Telecom has signed a business cooperation agreement with Nokia on quantum key distribution at the 'Mobile World Congress 2017' held in Barcelona, Spain on the 27th. Quantum key distribution is a communication security system that utilizes cryptographic technology based on quantum, a unit smaller than molecules. Through this agreement, SK Telecom and Nokia will jointly develop a quantum transmission system based on SK Telecom's quantum cryptography technology by the second half of this year, and plan to commercialize it by integrating it into Nokia's next-generation optical transmission equipment.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.
