As portable devices require increasingly more power, increasing battery capacity has become unavoidable to meet the demand for longer usage times. Designers face the challenge of reducing the charging time for these large batteries, minimizing heat dissipation during charging, and supporting extended features such as USB-OTG host capabilities.
Fairchild Semiconductor, a leading global supplier of high-performance power and mobile products, has developed the USB-compatible FAN5401x family of lithium-ion switching chargers that support USB ON-The-Go (USB OTG) in collaboration with customers to address these challenges. The FAN54013, the first product in the switch-mode topology FAN5400 family, features increased USB OTG boost power supporting an increased maximum charging current of 1.45A and up to 500mA at 5V.
When charging single-cell or parallel-cell lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries via a USB port or AC/DC adapter, the switch-mode based topology FAN54013 product provides fast charging and overcomes the thermal issues associated with conventional linear chargers. Typical applications involve charging single-cell or parallel-cell lithium-ion batteries in devices such as mobile phones, smartphones, tablets, wireless broadband hotspots, digital cameras, portable media/game players, and other portable products.
In addition to providing charging efficiency of up to 94%, the FAN54013 offers protection features such as a built-in 20V input voltage rating, thermal protection, reverse current cutoff, a watchdog timer, and an accurate +/-5% input current limit for USB compliance. The USB OTG host supports a built-in 5V 500mA boost converter using a charger-like inductor to reduce the number of external components.
To increase flexibility, the charging-related variables and operating modes of the FAN54013 can be programmed via an I2C interface that supports up to 3.4 Mbps. With a 1.96 x 1.87 mm, 20-pin, 0.4 mm pin pitch CSP package, the FAN5401x family is the smallest switch-mode alternative in the industry that supports both a charger and a USB-OTG 5V boost function up to 500 mA.
