KT Smart Energy Management Platform Wins Best Mobile Award in Smart Cities Category
Published2017.03.02 11:01KT announced on the 2nd that it won the "Best Use of Mobile for Smart Cities" award at MWC 2017 with its smart energy management platform 'KT-MEG (Micro Energy Grid)'.
The 'Global Mobile Awards (GLOMO)', which marks its 22nd edition this year, is hosted by GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association) and is the most prestigious award in the mobile communications field.
A judging panel consisting of mobile communications experts, analysts, and specialist journalists from around the world selects award winners in each category every year, announcing and presenting them at the MWC venue. Among these, the Smart Cities category is an award given to services that have contributed to the transformation and development of smart cities using mobile technology, and it is a newly established category for the first time this year.

KT began focusing on smart energy business as one of its future convergence services, opening the world's first open-type integrated energy management platform KT-MEG Center in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province in December 2015. The company announced that it is expanding the application scope of mobile technology to the energy sector by adopting mobile communication technology from the energy data collection and analysis process through to customer services.
KT-MEG is a platform capable of integrating and controlling the production, consumption, and trading of thermal and electrical energy. With management scope expandable from individual equipment to regional units, it is a system suitable for large-scale complex energy management such as renewable energy business as well as buildings.
Additionally, KT-MEG is equipped with an artificial intelligence (AI) engine called 'eBrain' that evolves on its own to provide customer-tailored services that reflect the rapidly changing industrial environment, delivering optimized solutions according to customers' energy consumption patterns.
Currently, the KT-MEG Center is conducting real-time integrated control of approximately 16,000 sites including energy efficiency, demand resource operation, electric vehicle charging, and renewable energy power plants.
Yoon Kyung-rim, Vice President of KT's Future Convergence Business Division, stated, "We are pleased that KT-MEG, which concentrates KT's ICT capabilities, has been recognized as world-class through this award" and added, "Going forward, we will lead new energy industries based on KT-MEG and achieve innovation in the energy business."

According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
