Silicon Labs Introduces Security and Low-Power MCU Suited for IoT Development
Published2017.03.20 10:57Silicon Labs continuously enhances its EFM32 Gecko microcontroller (MCU) product family to meet the design requirements of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. By implementing Silicon Labs' new Jade and Pearl Gecko MCUs, developers can add touch controller interfaces, robust security, and multiple low-power sensors to IoT devices. It supports over-the-air (OTA) updates for already deployed end products.
The Jade and Pearl Gecko MCUs provide hardware encryption technologies including energy-efficient encryption accelerators and Secure Management Units (SMU), which do not reduce battery life. The encryption accelerator drives encryption algorithms with lower power consumption compared to conventional software-based accelerators. In addition to conventional memory protection units, the SMU allows software to configure security by accessing peripherals. Each device can be secured via hardware, enabling register interface access only when there is proper access authorization.
The new MCU products provide up to 1024kB of flash memory and up to 256kB of RAM, enabling the development of embedded applications that support real-time operating systems (RTOS) such as Micrium OS.
The enhanced Jade and Pearl MCUs, based on ARM Cortex-M3 and M4 processors respectively, can implement active and sleep modes, IoT products, and other embedded systems. They can maintain active status even during deep-sleep mode and support capacitive touch interfaces without requiring additional external controllers. They also support Silicon Labs' LESENSE sensor interface, allowing sensor input to remain free even when the MCU core is in sleep mode.
Daniel Cooley, General Manager at Silicon Labs, stated, "To meet the rapidly evolving requirements of IoT, Silicon Labs continues to expand its Gecko MCU product family," and added, "The new Jade and Pearl MCUs represent the best combination of features including security, large memory options, peripheral integration, and ultra-low active and sleep mode currents."
