Verizon and Deutsche Kom Collaborate on Global 5G Technology
Discussion on Expanding Cooperation in Connected Car and IoT Fields

SK Telecom meets with U.S. mobile carrier Verizon and European mobile carrier Deutsche Telekom to significantly strengthen cooperation for leading global 5G technology and creating a global New ICT ecosystem.

Verizon's top executives, including Chairman Lowell McAdam, visited the SK Telecom 5G Innovation Center and met with SK Telecom President Park Jeong-ho to discuss ways to expand cooperation in fields such as 5G, connected cars, and IoT.

On this day, President Park and Chairman McAdam discussed in detail ① cooperation in 5G technology standardization and 5G virtualization technology development, ② joint development of solutions and leadership in standardization at the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), a 5G-based autonomous driving alliance, and ③ mutual exchange of IoT platforms owned by both companies and joint business development utilizing them.

We will also strengthen cooperation to lead 5G connected car technology. The two companies plan to review the joint development and test operation of V2X and telematics solutions (technology that exchanges or shares information such as traffic conditions while communicating with road infrastructure and other vehicles while driving) through strengthened cooperation at the 5GAA (5G Automotive Association).


Both companies plan to review the possibility of mutual exchange and joint utilization of IoT platforms, as well as media and AI platforms.

Meanwhile, on the 11th, top executives including Deutsche Telekom Chairman Tim Hoettgest will visit SK Telecom headquarters to discuss cooperation plans.

The two companies plan to discuss ① strengthening 5G technology cooperation, ② exploring joint business opportunities utilizing their connected car resources, and ③ sharing AI-related know-how and jointly discovering new services.

It was reported that the combined technological capabilities of both companies are expected to facilitate the smooth global expansion of 5G-based services, such as connected cars. This is because it will be easier to expand the 5G ecosystem through partnerships with global companies, including automakers in the U.S. and Germany, as well as to enable early service expansion through each mobile carrier's own subscribers.

SK Telecom CEO Park Jeong-ho stated, “We will accelerate 5G technology standardization together with leading global mobile operators and lead the development of various 5G-based services to expand the global New ICT ecosystem.”
