Facebook and the government are joining forces to help domestic startups expand overseas.
Facebook, the Korea Innovation Center (KIC) and the Information and Communications Technology Promotion Center (IITP) have agreed to jointly support the overseas expansion of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) companies, and held a signing ceremony for the “Digital Content R&D (VR/AR) Global Expansion Program Business Cooperation” at the Facebook Korea Business Hub.
The event was attended by Byun Jae-il, a member of the National Assembly's Future Broadcasting and Communications Committee, Choi Jae-yoo, Second Vice Minister of Science, ICT and Future Planning, Lee Sang-hong, Director of IITP, Lee Heon-soo, Director of KIC Silicon Valley, and Alex Stamos, Facebook's Chief Security Officer.
This business collaboration is also a pilot project of the Ministry of Science and ICT's 'Technology Revolution Together (TRT) Project with Global Companies.' Engineers from Oculus, a subsidiary of Facebook, will directly provide mentoring on commercialization and technology development to excellent VR/AR companies with technological prowess in the United States.
The selected companies will work with local partners, including Oculus, in Silicon Valley for 10 weeks, and a "Performance Demo Day" will be held around July of this year for companies that have completed the program. Outstanding companies will be selected as Facebook's cooperative partners and will strengthen cooperation in areas such as investment and purchasing.
Alex Stamos, Facebook's Chief Security Officer, who attended the event, said, "Facebook and Instagram are the most efficient platforms that serve as a bridge connecting Korea's excellent small and medium-sized enterprises with the global stage." He added, "In particular, I hope that the practical know-how of Oculus experts with advanced technology in the VR field, which is considered a key axis of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, will greatly contribute to laying the foundation for Korea's VR and AR companies to stand tall in the world."

[Experience] We asked the VR experience users what their desired price range would be. How much would it be?
I visited a virtual reality (VR) expo on the 10th. The VR expo, which featured around 40 different booths, showcased the current state of VR technology across gaming, video, healthcare, marketing, and other sectors. However, what caught the eye was the long waiting lines reminiscent of an amusement park, despite being a weekday morning, at the end of which stood VR attractions—amusement ride-type experience devices. I asked participants who had completed the experience whether they encountered any inconveniences, and if charged, what would be an appropriate price point.
