Fairchild Semiconductor's OptoHiT™ Series Provides Designers with Increased Design Margin in High-Temperature Industrial Applications
Industrial applications present reliability challenges to designers due to the high temperatures and tight spaces commonly found in power supplies, motor control, and consumer applications such as chargers and adapters. To address these reliability challenges, system design engineers need optocouplers that allow for greater design margins and have stable parameters in high-temperature environments.
To meet this need, Fairchild Semiconductor, a leading global supplier of high-performance power and mobile semiconductor solutions, has developed the FODM8801, part of its OptoHiT™ series of high-temperature phototransistor photocouplers. The device uses Fairchild’s proprietary OPTOPLANAR® coplanar packaging technology to achieve high noise immunity and reliable isolation at high temperatures.
The FODM8801 consists of a phototransistor and an optically coupled aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs) infrared light-emitting diode. The device provides guaranteed current transfer ratio (CTR) for saturated and non-saturated operation modes and switching specifications over an extended operating temperature range (-40 °C to +125 °C) for better design flexibility. The device provides excellent CTR linearity at high temperatures and operates at very low input currents (IF).
The FODM8801 is packaged in a small, half-pitch, mini-flat 4-pin package (1.27mm pitch) that saves board space, provides more design flexibility, and reduces overall system cost.
Additionally, the FODM8801 provides high isolation voltage for increased reliability in lead-free environments. The OptoHiT series products are ideally suited for industrial applications such as power supplies, motor control, and commercial applications, including chargers and adapters.
The FODM8801 is part of Fairchild’s comprehensive portfolio of high-performance optocouplers that offer advanced noise immunity due to their proprietary OPTOPLANAR coplanar packaging technology. OPTOPLANAR technology ensures a safe insulation thickness of more than 0.4 millimeters, which achieves reliable high-voltage isolation, and provides creepage and clearance distances of more than 5 millimeters, approved according to UL1577 and DIN_EN/IEC60747-5-2 standards.
