Low voltage, step down regulator
June 18, 2009 -- Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. today introduced the MAX17083, a low-voltage, step-down regulator with an integrated boost switch. Designed for space-constrained applications, the device integrates dual n-channel MOSFET power switches into a small 16mm² TQFN package.
An internal 25mΩ, low-side power MOSFET easily supports up to 5A of continuous load current, ensuring high efficiency while reducing the number of peripheral components.
The MAX17803 eliminates the need for an external boost diode or an external Schottky diode, further reducing space and cost. This compact step-down regulator is ideal for ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs), netbooks, portable gaming devices, and other low-power, ultra-small applications.
It uses a current mode, fixed frequency control architecture, making it easy to implement a structure that does not sacrifice transient response. This architecture also provides peak current limit protection and operates in pulse skipping mode, which maintains high efficiency even under low load conditions.
This step-down regulator generates a variable 0.75 V to 2.7 V output voltage from the system's 3.3 V or 5 V input supply. The device is housed in a 4 mm x 4 mm, 24-pin TQFN package.
