KT Delivers Keynote Speech at U.S. 5G Summit on the Theme '5G to be Showcased in PyeongChang'
Published2017.04.24 11:54KT announced that it discussed cooperation plans for 5G commercialization and technology development with global 5G leaders at the 'Brooklyn 5G Summit,' held at the New York Marriott Hotel for three days starting on the 19th.
The Brooklyn 5G Summit is an event hosted by Nokia and the NYU Wireless Research Center, where global operators, research institutes, and government agencies in the wireless communications field participate to share and discuss research results on next-generation mobile communications.
At the Brooklyn 5G Summit, KT held discussions with global ICT operators, including Verizon, NTT Docomo, and Qualcomm, regarding areas requiring inter-operator cooperation and how best to build 5G infrastructure as they prepare for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and 5G commercialization.
Representing South Korea, KT delivered a keynote speech on the topic of "5G pilot services to be showcased in PyeongChang 2018." KT explained the "PyeongChang 5G standards" and shared the structure of the 5G test network built in PyeongChang, Gangwon Province, and Gwanghwamun, Seoul, as well as the test results, with global telecommunications companies and manufacturers participating in the summit.
Jeon Hong-beom, Executive Vice President and Head of the Infrastructure Research Institute at KT Convergence Technology Institute, stated, "Cooperation with various operators is necessary for the commercialization of 5G," adding, "We will efficiently build networks and introduce 5G services early through KT's advanced 5G technology and cooperation with various operators."

KT to Lead 5G Forum for Two Years
KT was selected as the representative chairmanship in the 5th Regular General Assembly of the 5G Forum. The 5G Forum is an organization that conducts research and development on core 5G technologies and engages in domestic and international standardization activities. In addition to the three domestic mobile carriers, manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, and Ericsson-LG, venture companies, and major research institutes including the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) are participating. KT will lead the 5G Forum for two years starting from the 27th. Oh Seong-mok, president of the Network Division, was appointed as chairman of the 5G Forum representing KT. President Oh Seong-mok has been responsible for KT's wired and wireless networks since 2013 to the present, and as head of the "Pyeongchang 5G TF," is overseeing the "5G trial service" to be showcased in Pyeongchang in 2018.

KT Successfully Makes Hologram 5G Call Between Gwanghwamun and New Jersey
KT announced on the 3rd the results of 5G cooperation with US telecommunications company Verizon and stated that the two companies would continue cooperation in 5G services. At the meeting, the two companies successfully demonstrated hologram video calls between Gwanghwamun and New Jersey through global interoperability of 5G networks, showcasing the achievements of 5G cooperation and presenting a new paradigm for 5G business models both internally and externally. This was accomplished through continuous joint cooperation between KT and Verizon in the 5G sector since last year. The two companies have been jointly establishing 5G radio access technology standards that define interoperability between terminals and base stations, including frequency and transmission methods, since February of last year. They plan to complete the hardware standards specification shortly and will discuss specifications in the software field.

LTE 서비스의 최종 진화 단계로 불리는 ‘5밴드CA’ 기술이 상용화된다. SK텔레콤은 LTE 주파수 5개를 하나의 주파수처럼 묶어, 데이터 전송 속도와 성능을 높이는 ‘5밴드CA’ 기술을 갤럭시 S8에 적용한다고 밝혔다. 이 기술이 적용되면 700Mbps급 데이터 전송 속도로, 초기 LTE 대비 9배, 현 LTE 최고속인 500Mbps 대비 40% 빠르다고 업체 측은 전했다.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
