Infineon Technologies has launched the 5th generation CoolSET product family, which integrates a quasi-resonant flyback controller and power IC. By applying the latest technologies, it features enhanced efficiency, fast startup, and diverse load conditions. In particular, it is well-suited for use in AC/DC switch mode power supplies across various applications such as auxiliary power in consumer appliances, servers, and industrial SMPS.

The 5th generation CoolSET product family integrates the latest 700V and 800V CoolMOS P7 and 5th generation controller in a single package. It applies a newly developed cascode configuration with high-voltage MOSFET and integrates a current regulator for fast startup. Additionally, Active Burst Mode and selectable burst mode entry/exit thresholds optimize light-load performance.

Furthermore, these products use a new algorithm to minimize switching frequency distribution across different line conditions and simplify EMI filter design. Protection features include input overvoltage protection, brown-in/brown-out protection, pin ground short protection, and over-temperature protection using hysteresis. All protection functions are designed to enable automatic restart to minimize downtime.

The 5th generation quasi-resonant controller and CoolSET product portfolio will be available from May 2017. Controller products are available in SMD packages (DSO-8), and CoolSET products are available in SMD (DSO-12) and through-hole (DIP-7) packages. Sample orders are currently available.
