Release of High-Precision System-Ready D/A Converter with Built-in Precision Reference Conditioning Circuit

- 20-bit AD5790 and 18-bit AD5780 D/A converters, realizing the stability and ultra-low noise required to improve the accuracy of measurement equipment
- Integrates precision reference conditioning circuit to reduce board footprint by 60% compared to competitor products
December 6, 2011 – Analog Devices ( www.analog.com ), a global leader in high-performance semiconductors and a leader in the worldwide data converter market, today introduced a Digital-to-Analog (D/A) converter that simplifies the design of precision measurement and analysis equipment based on high accuracy and ultra-low noise characteristics. This new, highly accurate D/A converter features integrated precision reference conditioning circuitry, allowing it to be used directly in systems, and takes up 60% less board space than competitors' standalone data converters.
The AD5790 and AD5780 D/A converters offer excellent linearity and low noise, reducing the need to calibrate the system or calculate time-averaged values due to nonlinearity. Furthermore, they exhibit high stability with low drift with respect to time and temperature variations, eliminating the need for frequent system calibrations due to aging and temperature effects. Thanks to all these characteristics, ADI's new AD5790 and AD5780 not only drastically reduce the hassle of repeating tasks but also significantly cut system downtime and maintenance costs.
Designing precision analog systems often involves complex engineering challenges that require combining precision D/A converters with extensive signal conditioning and support circuitry to eliminate nonlinearity, minimize thermoelectric and noise sources, and reduce offset errors. The AD5790 and AD5780 D/A converters feature an integrated precision reference buffer, which significantly simplifies the development efforts required for advanced systems while greatly reducing performance risks and design cycles.
"Thanks to enhanced data conversion technology, instrument system designers are now able to develop, characterize, and test next-generation electronic instrumentation," said Mike Britchfield, Vice President of Analog Devices' Industrial and Instrumentation Group. He emphasized, "The AD5790 and AD5780 D/A converters set a new milestone in precision by combining 20-bit and 18-bit performance, respectively, with ultra-low noise characteristics and integrated precision reference conditioning circuitry into a single device, enabling complex applications used across a wide range of industries."
AD5790 and AD5780 D/A converters achieve a noise spectral density of 9 nV/rt-Hz
The AD5790 and AD5780 D/A converters provide accuracy of ±2 LSB at 20 bits and ±1 LSB at 18 bits, respectively, regardless of temperature variation. These devices, which guarantee monotonicity, are specified with a maximum DNL of –1 LSB. The AD5790 and AD5780 D/A converters feature a peak-to-peak voltage of 1.1 µV, low-frequency output noise, a noise spectral density of 9 nV/rt-Hz, and a temperature drift of less than 0.05 ppm/°C. The output can be configured for standard unipolar (+5 V, +10 V) or bipolar (±5 V, ±10 V) output ranges. These devices use a versatile 3-wire serial interface operating at clock speeds up to 50 MHz, with an analog update rate of 2.5 µs. The AD5790 and AD5780 D/A converters are fully specified to operate over an extended temperature range of –40ºC to +125ºC.
