Pilot project to reduce the burden of electricity bills on consumers
It will be implemented starting this July and is scheduled for commercialization in the second half of 2018.

Samsung Electronics and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Energy IoT (Internet of Things) business cooperation for a pilot project on energy peak management that utilizes smart home appliances to reduce the burden of electricity bills on consumers.

Executives from both companies, including Samsung Electronics CEO Yoon Boo-keun and KEPCO President Cho Hwan-ik, attended the signing ceremony and pledged to collaborate on an 'Energy Peak Management Project' that combines expertise in information and communication technology with power management.


The energy peak management project, which provides an 'energy IoT service' that automatically saves energy during peak hours when instantaneous maximum power consumption is recorded, is being attempted for the first time in the world by Samsung Electronics and Korea Electric Power Corporation.

To this end, the two companies have decided to develop products equipped with power peak management functions for Wind-Free air conditioners and T9000 refrigerators, apply LTE-based IoT platform technology, and conduct an energy peak management project in a pilot form targeting 100 households in the metropolitan area for one year starting in July of this year.

Based on this, we plan to expand the scope of application for smart home appliances and build related infrastructure so that they can be commercialized starting from the second half of 2018.

Consumers will receive energy savings generated through the 'Energy IoT Service' in the form of incentives, and will not be responsible for communication charges incurred from LTE usage..

Through the signing of this MOU, the two companies plan to discuss measures to strengthen energy efficiency and consumer incentive support by cooperating in four areas: ▲ pilot projects for peak management utilizing smart home appliances and sharing of results, ▲ certification standards and government notices for smart home appliances and IoT, ▲ sharing of big data information on electricity and smart home appliances and development of energy IoT business models, and ▲ joint research and technology exchange on integrated energy solutions and creation of domestic and international markets.

Samsung Electronics CEO Yoon Boo-keun stated, “Starting with this year’s pilot project, we will build a foundation to not only commercialize the domestic energy IoT business but also expand IoT platform-based energy businesses overseas.”
