December 09, 2011, Seoul – STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM), a global semiconductor company in various electronic device applications, announced the industry's first new device with enhanced protection performance to defend various broadband communication equipment from excessive surges while meeting increasingly stringent industry standards regarding voltage surges.
ST's LCP12 IC prevents high-voltage surges through the tip and ring signal lines of a Subscriber Line Interface Card (SLIC) that connects the telecom local loop to the access network. These voltage surges can be caused by lightning strikes, electromagnetic coupling, or direct contact with AC power lines.
LCP12 provides protection functions specified by telecommunication standards in the Americas, Europe, and the Far East, such as the GR-1089 CORE standard, the ITU-TK.20/21 standard for operator and subscriber premises devices, and similar Chinese YD/T standards. LCP12 is rated for a maximum surge current of 75A for a 5/310µs waveform under 4kV conditions and is the only protection device that meets future Chinese standards.
Because the new device incorporates a thyristor, it can prevent positive and negative surges on two lines, providing a higher level of protection performance than the previous generation product, LCP02. In addition, since LCP12 is fully compatible with existing equivalent products, it supports drop-in upgrades to meet new, stricter protection standards that will be implemented in the future. In addition, it is compatible with most dual battery voltage SLICs currently in use, thanks to its wide firing voltage range from -120V to +120V.
