Training for Customs Officials on Counterfeit Identification Methods to Strengthen Customs Inspections

LG Electronics announced that it is strengthening consumer protection activities due to the rampant proliferation of counterfeit LG Tone Plus products.
Since the crackdown on counterfeit LG Tone Plus began in 2014, the number of websites selling counterfeit products that have been detected or requested to cease transactions has reached approximately 4,000. In addition, about 40,000 counterfeit items have been seized in cooperation with frontline police, special judicial police, and customs officials. In terms of market value, this amounts to approximately 5 billion won.





Legal measures are being strengthened against manufacturers not only domestically but also overseas. Earlier this year, the company filed a lawsuit against 22 counterfeit sellers in the United States and secured a judgment ordering a sales halt and $160 million in damages. There are many counterfeit products made so similar that it is difficult to distinguish them from genuine products based solely on their packaging and appearance.
Training is being provided to customs officials to identify counterfeit goods, such as those lacking logos or specifications.

LG Electronics service centers receive dozens of service requests daily for counterfeit Tone Plus products, but since non-genuine products cannot be serviced, the damage falls entirely on the consumers.

Park Hyung-woo, Senior Vice President of LG Electronics IPD BD1, emphasized, “We will respond resolutely to protect the legitimate rights of consumers and manufacturers and ensure that the value of products is recognized.”
