- Industry's first simplification of international cable modem standard design certification... Realization of heterogeneous interface integration
December 12, 2011, Seoul – STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM), a global semiconductor company in various electronic device applications and a leader in set-top box ICs, announced the STiH225, an IC for interactive HD PVR (Personal Video Recorder) cable set-top boxes that improves design, cost, and customer certification issues. The STiH225 meets Data over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) and EuroDOCSIS standards and simplifies the initial certification process for new designs.
The STiH225 integrates an interactive cable set-top box processor and analog/digital interfaces onto a single chip. It combines the capabilities of ST's STi7141 cable STB system-on-chip and the STV0130 3-channel analog front-end with an Ethernet interface. When it was released in January 2009, the STi7141 was the first device to support HDTV, broadband internet up to 100 Mbps (implemented by integrated cable modems), and advanced digital video recording capabilities as a single component.
The STiH225, utilizing the configurational technology of the STi7141, features dual-core processing to ensure perfect performance for set-top boxes and broadband communication. The software of the STiH225 and STi7141 is compatible, allowing customers to quickly and easily migrate existing designs to the new device, and DOCSIS 2.0 certification and support for Internet Protocol v6 are available.
By adding certain components, a 3-channel set-top box based on the device can be completed. Designers can use three separate cable tuners or tuner modules provided in a standard network interface module form factor. Through these additional features, it is possible to produce interactive set-top boxes that reduce PCB space and BOM costs and provide high value-added services.
Laurent Remont, Director of Advanced System Architecture at STMicroelectronics’ Home Entertainment and Display Group, stated, “The STiH225 and reference designs enable equipment developers to bring highly functional new products to market as quickly and at competitive prices as possible,” adding, “If the STi7141 established a new industry standard in 2009 with its integrated capabilities, the STiH225 will take systems to the next level.”
