KT and GS Retail to Create Future-Type Stores Incorporating IT Technology

In particular, regarding big data, when GS Retail's customer payment data is combined with KT's foot traffic data and latest customer information, the accuracy and reliability of customer analysis will improve, making it possible to provide customers with customized, differentiated products and services across approximately 12,000 GS stores nationwide.
Additionally, by advancing KT's Happy Call system, GS25 proprietors and store managers will be able to easily acquire information and knowledge necessary for store operations and customer service, which is expected to improve the efficiency of store operations.
Furthermore, KT and GS Retail decided to continuously pursue technology exchange based on cutting-edge ICT technologies such as 5G, IoT, and AI to strengthen O2O (Online to Offline) services, innovate logistics, enhance convenience for proprietors, and simplify payment methods.
Yeon-su Heo, Representative Director of GS Retail, stated, "Together with KT, the nation's largest ICT company, we aim to lead innovative changes in customer lifestyles through future-type store development," and added, "We will use this agreement as an opportunity to create Win-Win situations for GS Retail and KT in various fields."

KT and LG Electronics collaborate on home IoT services
KT announced that it is strengthening cooperation to expand "Home IoT" by introducing six types of "GiGA IoT Home Manager" services in conjunction with LG Electronics that work with home appliances. The six types of home appliances that are being integrated this time are air conditioners, air purifiers, robot vacuums, ovens, refrigerators, and washing machines, which realize IoT more broadly through wireless routers connected via Wi-Fi in the home. The artificial intelligence TV "GigaGenie" can also be used in conjunction with these services. KT and LG Electronics provide functions such as device status confirmation, remote control, and status notifications for each of the six appliances. Through the GiGA IoT Home Manager app, users can check the washing machine operation time, and if the washing machine completes before arriving home, the wrinkle care function can be activated. Air conditioners and air purifiers can be operated without the product's remote control. The GiGA IoT Home Manager app provides a recipe function that automatically assists with complex control tailored to the user's lifestyle. Complex control services can be enjoyed, such as automatically operating LG Electronics air purifiers when indoor fine dust levels exceed a certain threshold. Kim Jun-geun, head of the KT GiGA IoT Business Division, stated, "Through home IoT business cooperation between KT and LG Electronics, we have been able to introduce convenient and differentiated home appliance-telecommunications convergence services," and added, "In addition to cooperation with LG Electronics, we plan to introduce various home IoT services linked with GigaGenie so that customers can enjoy more affluent lives."

KT Begins Commercialization Test of NB-IoT, a Dedicated Network for the Internet of Small Things
KT announced that it has built a dedicated IoT communication network for NB-IoT and is launching commercial services in Seoul and the metropolitan area. Following the commercialization of LTE-M in March of last year, KT is now commercializing NB-IoT as well, providing standard-compliant LTE-M and NB-IoT commercial services in the IoT network sector. NB-IoT enables service not only at ground level but also in underground spaces such as water and sewage pipes and gas pipelines. Additionally, it is a service without signal interference using KT's dedicated frequency band. KT plans to deploy its business in a hybrid form, providing LTE-M for areas requiring data transmission and NB-IoT for areas requiring low-speed transmission of small-scale data. To commercialize the NB-IoT network, KT is currently conducting location tracking beta testing with Samsung using mobile NB-IoT terminals called "multipurpose location trackers."

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.

ETRI Develops 200Gbps Photodetector… Initiates Localization of Optical Receivers for AI Data Centers
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has developed a photodetector device that processes optical signals of approximately 200Gbps per channel for the first time in Korea. This device is a component that converts optical signals into electrical signals and determines the reception performance of AI data centers and 5G/6G communication networks. ETRI achieved bandwidth of 70GHz or higher and optical responsivity of 0.75A/W or higher, and integrated an indium phosphide lens on the rear of the chip to enhance optical reception efficiency and alignment convenience. The technology was presented at OECC 2025 and was recently published in the international academic journal 'Optics Express'.
