Shipment of the world's first scalable processing platform Zynq-7000 devices to customers
By demonstrating the first Zynq silicon application at the ARM Europe Technology Conference
Customers migrate to applications developed with early access tools and emulation platforms.
Xilinx Korea (Country Manager Heung-sik Ahn) December 12, 2011 – Xilinx announced the shipment of the first Zynq™-7000 Scalable Processing Platform (EPP) to customers. This marks a significant step toward the launch of a complete embedded processing platform that, for the first time, provides developers with ASIC-level performance and power consumption, the flexibility of an FPGA, and the programmability of a microprocessor. Customers who have developed systems using the Zynq-7000 EPP emulation platform, early access Xilinx hardware tools, and standard software tools supported by the ARM® Connected community are migrating their applications to this first device and taking a step forward in product development.
Xilinx will publicly demonstrate the Zynq-7000 EPP, a device that runs Linux-based applications, for the first time at the ARM European Technical Conference.
Lawrence Getman, Vice President of Processing at Xilinx, said, “Since we first launched the Scalable Processing Platform in April 2010, early access customers have been able to see what they have achieved, and we are pleased to apply their systems to this first device,” adding, “Xilinx is now able to provide time-to-market benefits for developing and introducing new products that require the best system performance, flexibility, and level of integration offered by these new system-on-chips.”
For systems that need to support applications requiring real-time high performance, the Zynq-7000 EPP provides a level of performance beyond what is possible with existing processing solutions. Emulation platforms, hardware development tools, open-source Linux support, and the recently announced scalable virtual platform developed in collaboration with Cadence Design Systems all help enable the development and implementation of the Zynq-7000 EPP system. The list of supported OS includes a scalable ecosystem providing embedded tools and software development solutions.
Jamie Smith, Director of Embedded Systems Product Marketing at National Instruments (NI), said, “By participating in the Early Access program and gaining the opportunity to start development, National Instruments has enabled NI LabVIEW system design software to program both the high-performance processor and programmable architecture of the Zynq-7000 EPP in a single development environment. With the receipt of silicon, we will continue development to provide control and monitoring systems to customers who can leverage the enhanced capabilities of the Zynq-7000 device.”
The Zync-7000 family integrates the ARM dual-core Cortex™-A9 MPCore™ processing system and the Xilinx scalable 28nm programmable logic architecture. It supports the parallel development of software for dual-core Cortex-A9 processor-based systems and for custom accelerators and peripherals of the programmable logic architecture. Software developers can utilize the Eclipse environment, Xilinx Platform Studio software development kit (SDK), ARM Development Studio 5 (DS-5) and ARM RealView Development Suite (RVDS), or compilers, debuggers, and applications from leading vendors within the ARM Connected Community and Xilinx Alliance program ecosystem, such as Enea Services, Linköping AB, Express Logic, Inc, Lauterbach Datentechnik GmbH, MathWorks, PetaLogix, Mentor Graphics Corp., Micrium, and Wind River Systems.

Developers can tune the programmable logic of the Zynq-7000 family to maximize system-level performance and efficiently handle application-specific requirements. Xilinx’s award-winning ISE® Design Suite enables rapid design and verification by providing a comprehensive hardware development environment that includes development tools, plug-and-play IP cores suitable for the AMBA® 4 Advanced Extensible Interface (AXI) bus protocol, and a Bus Functional Model (BFM).
Michael Fawcett, CTO of iVeia, said, “We have devoted our efforts to the development of Zynq-7000 EPP products and IP over the past few months. We were very pleased to receive the first Zynq-7020 device. Our Atlas-I-Z7e will be the first computer module to accommodate Zynq devices and will fit into existing sockets for Android portable, digital radio, and video processing applications. Thanks to Xilinx’s early access support, tools, and emulation platform, we expect to be able to demonstrate such applications within a few months.”
Evolving market requirements
To meet customer requirements for high-end applications targeting the wired, wireless, and video broadcasting markets, Xilinx is expanding its product family of 12.5Gbps transceiver technology to 16 by announcing the new Zynq-7045 device as a replacement for the Zynq-7040. This will enable additional connectivity applications and a wider range of connections for high-speed DACs/ADCs. With increased programmable logic capacity, designers can perform signal processing for functions such as filtering and digital conversion, and have broad opportunities to customize detailed features. The Zynq-7045 device will form the new high-end Zynq-7000 family, ranging from 30,000 logic cell products targeting price-sensitive industrial, automotive, and consumer applications to up to 350,000 logic cells for applications requiring the highest capacity and performance on a single scalable platform.

Supply timing
The first samples of the Zynq-7020 EPP are currently being shipped to early access program participants, and products suitable for mass production are scheduled to be shipped in the second half of 2012.
