With the new Micrel DC-DC converter family, POL designs with high power density and high efficiency are now possible.
San Jose, California--(Marketwire – December 12, 2011) – Micrel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MCRL), a leader in analog, high-bandwidth communication, and Ethernet IC solutions, has launched the new SuperSwitcher II™ family of integrated MOSFET buck regulators for high-power density DC-DC applications. The new MIC26xxx family consists of six DC-DC buck regulators utilizing Micrel’s proprietary HyperSpeed Control™ and HyperLight Load® architectures. These devices are targeted at distributed power systems, communication networking and infrastructure, and industrial applications. The MIC26601/901/1201 and MIC26603/903/1203 are currently available in quantity, priced at $1.58/$1.74/$1.88 and $1.62/$1.77/$1.92, respectively, for 1,000-unit quantities. Samples can be ordered at http://www.micrel.com/ProductList.do .
Brian Hedayati, Vice President of Marketing for Micrel’s Analog Business Unit, stated, “System designers need to implement efficient and as small a power supply as possible.” He added, “With Micrel’s proprietary HyperSpeed Control and HyperLight Load Control architectures used in the SuperSwitcher II family, designers can create compact power supplies with optimized efficiency at the power levels most critical to each design.” The common footprint of Micrel’s SuperSwitcher II series also enables maximum design reuse across a wide range of output currents.
The MIC26601/901/1201 and MIC26603/903/1203 operate within an input supply voltage range of 4.5V to 28V and provide output currents of 6A, 9A, and 12A, respectively. The SuperSwitcher II series is designed for Any Capacitor™ stables and is independent of the output capacitance Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR). This resolves the persistent stability issues faced by power designers when handling distributed output capacitance. The SuperSwitcher II series buck regulators operate DC-DC loads with over 95% efficiency and run at a 600kHz switching frequency with ±1% output voltage accuracy. The output can be downregulated to 0.8V.
The SuperSwitcher II device features an onboard 5V regulator that enables single-supply operation and includes a set of protection functions such as an enable pin for ultra-low power shutdown, internal soft start, undervoltage lockout, internal compensation, and pre-vias safe start, overtemperature protection, fold-back current limit, and short-circuit protection. The MIC26601/901/1201 and MIC26603/903/1203 buck regulators are available in thermally enhanced lead-free 28-lead 5mm x 6mm MLF® packages.
Information regarding Micrel Technology
HyperSpeed Control and HyperLight Load are patented control architectures developed by Micrel for the latest generation of DC-DC conversion products. "HyperSpeed Control" refers to ultra-fast load transient response, while "HyperLight Load" refers to the ability to maintain high efficiency even at low loads (80% or more of maximum load < 1%). Micrel developed these architectures to meet the need for unconditional high efficiency, ultra-fast transient response, and ease of use resulting from minimal external components and small solution sizes. The HyperSpeed Control architecture employs digital modification, adaptive on-time control, and ripple injection techniques, while the HyperLight Load architecture provides the same performance as HyperSpeed Control when operating under sub-overload conditions. With the HyperSpeed Control and HyperLight Load architectures, Micrel's DC-DC regulators and controllers are perfectly suited for POL applications requiring tight tolerances and ultra-fast transient response, while minimizing the number of external components and BOM costs and maximizing efficiency.
