- Home multimedia networking applied standard ∙∙∙ High-bandwidth content sharing using coaxial cable
December 19, 2011, Seoul - STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM), a global semiconductor company serving diverse electronic device application fields and a leading provider in the set-top box IC sector, announced that it has obtained MoCA® 1.1 certification for the STi7108M video recorder, which enables easy sharing of content and services from HD set-top boxes or digital video recorders (DVRs) anywhere in the home.
The MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) standard applied to home entertainment networking uses existing coaxial cables to enable sharing of high-bandwidth content such as streaming HD video, games, broadband internet access, and OTT (Over The Top, online video) services anywhere in the home. MoCA provides high-speed and Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities for seamless streaming without interruption, and offers convenient solutions for multi-unit residential spaces such as single-family homes and apartments as well as commercial buildings such as hotels. MoCA-certified products have been adopted by cable and pay-TV operators in the United States, and with the technology currently in trial stages in Europe, the potential market is substantial. ST is a sponsoring member of MoCA.
Charles Cerino, Chairman of MoCA, stated, "STMicroelectronics' participation expands the 'connected home' and meets the increasing demand for robust backbone infrastructure." Set-top boxes equipped with MoCA-certified STi7108M can be easily added to a home network simply by plugging into a coaxial socket. The high-end STi7108M semiconductor delivers superior features including a high-performance ARM® graphics engine supporting 3D TV functionality, 3D gaming and advanced program guides, and a dual application processor featuring ST's Faroudja™ video processing that maximizes display image quality. The STi7108M implementing these features optimally leverages MoCA's high-bandwidth connectivity to deliver an enhanced user experience.
Laurent Remont, General Director of Connected Home Business Division at STMicroelectronics, stated, "We have successfully obtained MoCA 1.1 certification for the STi7108M product, enabling us to bring new MoCA-certified semiconductors to market faster and more efficiently," and added, "We will have a product portfolio with built-in MoCA capabilities ranging from simple clients to multi-demodulator gateways."
