[Photo News] KT Collaborates with AT&T on 5G Technology

KT announced that it discussed cooperation plans between the two companies regarding 5G and SDN/NFV (Software-based Networking and Network Virtualization) technologies at the KT R&D Center in Seoul, with key executives from both companies in attendance, including KT's Head of Convergence Technology Institute Lee Dong-myeon and AT&T's CSO John Donovan.
AT&T has been leading the development of SDN/NFV, one of the core 5G technologies, for the past two years, and is expected to have many areas of cooperation with KT, which is leading 5G technology development, such as recently announcing its 5G platform, Network 3.0 Indigo.
"We expect that the cooperation between the two companies, leveraging AT&T's SDN/NFV leadership and KT's 5G leadership, will bring about synergy that can solve the challenges of the future telecommunications industry," said Lee Dong-myeon, Head of KT's Convergence Technology Institute.

KT to open its Wi-Fi network not only to its own customers but also to customers of other companies
KT announced on the 11th that it will open approximately 100,000 WiFi Access Points (APs) nationwide to the general public in August. WiFi will be opened primarily at locations with high data usage, including ▲lifestyle convenience facilities (convenience stores/department stores/large-scale marts/bus stops/subway stations/terminals/gas stations, etc.), ▲tourist attractions (plazas/parks), and ▲sports and culture facilities (concert halls/theaters/bookstores) that are closely related to daily life and have high foot traffic. According to wireless data traffic statistics from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, WiFi traffic in April 2017 reached approximately 14,108TB, nearly doubling from 7,309TB in April 2014, indicating steady WiFi demand from users over the three-year period. KT's opening of 100,000 APs represents the largest-scale WiFi infrastructure opening to date, allowing not only KT customers but also competitors' customers to enjoy WiFi services provided by KT. Competitors' customers will be able to use 1 hour of free WiFi after viewing advertisements for a certain duration (5-15 seconds) when accessing KT WiFi APs. KT to turn online registered credit, membership, and transportation cards into offline 'real cards'
KT announced on the 13th the launch of 'CLiP CARD (Clip Card)', an ALL-In-One Smart Card Device that enables users to use credit/debit cards, membership cards, and transportation cards all on a single card. CLiP CARD was launched in consideration of the fact that most card users perceive convenient payment methods as supplementary payment means compared to physical cards, as well as the activation of the fintech market. 'CLiP CARD', which is the same size as existing credit cards, can accommodate a total of 21 payment methods on a single card, including 10 credit/debit cards, 10 membership cards, and 1 prepaid transportation card. Offline merchant payments are possible without dependence on networks, smartphone app operation, specific manufacturers' terminals, OS, or telecommunications carriers. Additionally, with a 1.3-inch display, users can check at a glance the balance of their registered transportation card, membership barcode number, and the type of card to be used for payment. A single charge enables approximately 3 to 4 weeks of usage.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
