[Photo News] KT Collaborates with AT&T on 5G Technology

KT announced that it discussed cooperation plans between the two companies regarding 5G and SDN/NFV (Software-based Networking and Network Virtualization) technologies at the KT R&D Center in Seoul, with key executives from both companies in attendance, including KT's Head of Convergence Technology Institute Lee Dong-myeon and AT&T's CSO John Donovan.
AT&T has been leading the development of SDN/NFV, one of the core 5G technologies, for the past two years, and is expected to have many areas of cooperation with KT, which is leading 5G technology development, such as recently announcing its 5G platform, Network 3.0 Indigo.
"We expect that the cooperation between the two companies, leveraging AT&T's SDN/NFV leadership and KT's 5G leadership, will bring about synergy that can solve the challenges of the future telecommunications industry," said Lee Dong-myeon, Head of KT's Convergence Technology Institute.

According to the MOU signed among three parties—KT, the City of Boston, and Netblazr—KT's GiGA Wire technology is scheduled to be supplied to Boston. KT to open its Wi-Fi network not only to its own customers but also to customers of other companies
KT는 전국 10만 규모의 WiFi AP(Access Point)를 전국민에게 8월 중 개방할 방침이라고 11일 밝혔다. 일상 생활과 밀접하고 유동인구가 많은 ▲생활편의시설(편의점/백화점/대형마트/버스정류장/지하철역/터미널/주유소등), ▲관광지(광장/공원), ▲체육문화시설(공연장/극장/서점)등 데이터 이용이 많은 장소를 중심으로 WiFi를 개방한다. 미래창조과학부 무선데이터 트래픽 통계에 따르면 2017년 4월 WiFi트래픽은 약14,108TB로 2014년 4월 7,309TB 대비 3년 간 약 2배 가까이 늘어 이용자들의 꾸준한 WiFi수요가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이번 KT의 10만 AP개방은 역대 최대 수준의 WiFi인프라를 개방하는 것으로, KT고객뿐만 아니라 타사 고객들도 KT가 제공하는 WiFi서비스를 누릴 수 있게 된다. 타사 고객들은 KT WiFi AP접속시 일정 시간(5~15초) 광고를 시청한 후 1시간 무료WiFi를 이용하는 방식이며, 구체적인 이용 방법은 8월 중 올레닷컴(www.olleh.com)등을 통해 안내할 계획이다.

KT to turn online registered credit, membership, and transportation cards into offline 'real cards'
KT는 13일 신용/체크카드, 멤버십카드, 교통카드를 하나의 카드에 담아 사용할 수 있는 ALL-In-One Smart Card Device인 ‘CLiP CARD(클립 카드)’를 출시한다고 밝혔다. CLiP CARD는 대부분의 카드 이용자들이 간편결제 수단은 실물카드 대비 보조결제 수단으로 인지하고, 핀테크 시장이 활성화되는 이유 등을 고려해 출시했다. 기존 신용카드와 동일한 크기인 ‘CLiP CARD’는 신용/체크카드 10개, 멤버십카드 10개, 선불형 교통카드 1개를 포함해 총 21개의 결제 수단을 하나의 카드에 담을 수 있다. 네트워크, 스마트폰 앱 구동, 특정 제조사의 단말, OS, 통신사에 구애를 받지 않고 오프라인 가맹점 결제가 가능하다. 또한, 1.3인치의 디스플레이로 사용자가 등록한 교통카드 잔액, 멤버십 바코드 번호, 결제할 카드의 종류를 한눈에 확인할 수 있고 1번 충전하면 3~4주간 사용할 수 있다.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
