SK Telecom's 5G Technology Recognized Globally, 3rd Global Award

SK Telecom has once again won a global award for its innovative 5G technology.
SK Telecom announced on the 14th (local time) that it won the 'Best 5G Trial Between an Operator and Vendor' award at the global technology awards 'TechXLR8' held in London, UK.
The 'TechXLR8 (Technology Accelerator 8)' awards are organized by the global ICT research institute 'Informa Telecom & Media' and take place during 'London Technology Week 2017'. The awards select and present approximately 20 innovative technologies across a total of eight categories, including 5G, IoT, and VR & AR.
Informa Telecom & Media highly praised SK Telecom’s collaborative efforts to build a 5G ecosystem with various companies, including Ericsson and domestic small and medium-sized enterprises, to unveil the world’s first 5G connected car, ‘T5’. When SK Telecom demonstrated ‘T5’ last November, it showcased services such as wireless transmission technology connecting 28GHz high-frequency band radio waves with the vehicle, network slicing support technology, and multi-view and video recognition in collaboration with various companies.
SK Telecom's advanced 5G technology is widely recognized around the world as a representative of Korea. Last May, SK Telecom won the Infrastructure Innovation Award for its '5G Handover Technology' at the 'GTB Awards,' and its world's first 5G connected car, 'T5,' won the 'Most Innovative Partnership Strategy' award at the 'Telecom Asia Award.'
Meanwhile, SK Telecom released the nation's first 5G commercialization 'RFI (Request for Information)' last March and is leading the creation of a 5G ecosystem, with about 50 ICT companies attending related briefing sessions. In addition, it is taking the lead in accelerating 5G technology development and preventing technology fragmentation by leading international standardization activities in 3GPP, NGMN, etc., and building test networks in Gangnam, Bundang, and Yeongjongdo, as well as developing and verifying technology.
Park Jin-hyo, Head of the Network Technology Institute at SK Telecom, stated, “This award is a remarkable achievement in which the world recognizes SK Telecom’s innovative network technology,” adding, “We will continue our global technology leadership through continuous technology development.”

SKT. 'Data obtained from offshore base stations transmitted via underwater communication'
The ocean: Earth's last communication blind spot. Underwater communication technology for creating the world's first "submarine communication base station" has been unveiled. Underwater communication technology is becoming increasingly critical in South Korea, where three sides of the country are surrounded by ocean, addressing demands including ▲national defense needs such as submarine detection, as well as ▲monitoring radioactivity and shellfish toxins and red tide tracking for seafood safety, and ▲early warning systems for tsunamis and submarine earthquakes. Global competition among nations is intensifying. SK Telecom and Hoseo University announced on the 31st that they successfully conducted underwater communication technology tests using LTE methods in an environment 10km west of Incheon Southern Port, at a water depth of approximately 25m, with a transmission/reception distance of approximately 800m. This is "base station-based underwater communication technology" that has been conducted since 2015, with SK Telecom and 13 other research institutions participating through 2021. On this day, Hoseo University and SK Telecom measured approximately 10 types of information including underwater water temperature, salinity, and current velocity, successfully implementing continuous transmission and reception of text and image data at 20-second intervals by superimposing LTE (OFDM modulation) frequency onto acoustic waves (3~70KHz). During the technology demonstration, the research team showcased real-time image transmission of text and photo data, demonstrating that information collected through various sensors in the underwater network can be aggregated at an underwater base station and then reliably transmitted to land through marine buoys. The waters off Incheon in the West Sea are particularly unsuitable for underwater communication due to high turbidity and shallow depth; the demonstration is evaluated as having demonstrated stable underwater communication network performance despite these adverse conditions. Professor Ko Hak-lim of Hoseo University stated, "The demonstration of underwater communication methods for creating submarine base stations is the first in Korea, and through this demonstration, various data aggregated at the underwater base station successfully transmitted to marine buoys via underwater communication, marking our advancement beyond the critical research phase for establishing an underwater base station testbed."

SK Telecom showcased a 5G hot air balloon at the Jamsil Sports Complex, where the music festival 'Ultra Korea 2017' was held. SK Telecom operated a VR hot air balloon during the 'Ultra Korea' event, allowing music fans to experience media services that 5G would offer in advance. When visitors put on VR devices and boarded the hot air balloon, they could feel vivid immersion as if actually flying through the real sky in a virtual space.
