KT Showcases 5G Technology at MWC Shanghai 2017

KT announced its participation as a domestic telecommunications company at the Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2017 (MWC Shanghai 2017), Asia's largest mobile communications exhibition, taking place over four days from the 28th to the 30th in Shanghai, China.
MWC Shanghai 2017 is Asia's largest-scale mobile exhibition organized by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), which began in 2012 and is now in its sixth year. The theme of MWC Shanghai 2017 is "The Human Element," with an expected participation of approximately 65,000 visitors from around the world.
KT is participating as a representative of the Republic of Korea in the official theme pavilion "Innovation City" at MWC Shanghai 2017 and has established a Pyeongchang 5G Zone and a Startup Zone. KT's exhibition booth features a white-tone design that allows visitors to experience the feeling of meeting Pyeongchang 5G in the middle of summer.
At the "Pyeongchang 5G" zone, KT will showcase various 5G-based technologies including 5G communication technology, Smart Gate, and Smart Air Quality Safety IoT solutions.
The "5G Communication Technology" features KT's 5G trial service, which will be showcased for the first time in the world at Pyeongchang through HoloLens MR (Mixed Reality), and KT will introduce the speed and coverage based on Pyeongchang 5G standards.
"Smart Gate" is a solution that, when an incoming traveler carrying a mobile phone passes through the gate, checks call and data access history from infected disease-contaminated areas and notifies quarantine officials. Smart Gate recognizes the mobile phone by sending and receiving 3G and LTE network signals, not auxiliary functions such as WiFi, Bluetooth, or NFC, so it can identify the device simply by having the mobile phone powered on without any additional operation.
The "Smart Air Quality Safety IoT Solution" is a solution that allows users to check air quality information collected by IoT terminals in real time through the web and smartphone apps. When indoor or outdoor environments deteriorate or deviate from preset standards, it sends alerts to mobile phones and provides real-time information on ultrafine particulate matter (PM2.5), fine particulate matter (PM10), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), temperature, humidity, noise, and weather information based on location. This solution is expected to attract attention from visitors who are increasingly interested in the environment due to fine particulate matter and global warming.
Additionally, KT is supporting the global market entry of startups by allocating exhibition space to two companies participating in its startup support program, "K-Champ Lab."
"GeoAITI" is exhibiting a health bike that allows users to maintain their health enjoyably while playing IPTV-smart device-linked games. The health bike provides the sensation of riding an actual bicycle, where pedal resistance reflects when an uphill slope appears on the TV screen, and provides real-time exercise coaching through an app. GeoAITI recently established a partnership with local Chinese partner PURE SPORTS and launched the health bike in the Chinese market.
"AnalogPlus" is exhibiting Ahead, a Bluetooth-based compact communication device that converts ordinary helmets into smart helmets with simple attachment. Through smartphone integration, it provides music playback, voice navigation, phone calls, and message notification services. Ahead uses vibration transducer technology that converts sound into vibration and transmits sound through helmet vibration, requiring no separate speakers or microphones, and applies noise-canceling technology to filter out surrounding noise.
KT Public Relations Director Yoon Jong-jin said, "KT will showcase Korea's advanced IT technological capabilities to the world as a representative telecommunications company at MWC Shanghai 2017," and added, "KT will continue to lead 5G-based technology development to successfully support the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and will remain committed to supporting domestic startups in expanding their presence globally."

KT announced that it has completed the development of a 5G repeater to be utilized in the 5G pilot service to be showcased in PyeongChang in '18, and has successfully achieved interoperability with base stations compliant with PyeongChang 5G specifications. The 5G repeater successfully developed this time is a device developed to secure stable 5G service coverage even inside buildings, and has been jointly researched and developed by KT and SME partners since 2016. When applying a digital optical repeater currently used in the 4G(LTE) environment to a 5G network, it is difficult for the 5G base station and terminal to connect normally due to delay time generated during the conversion process of analog (wireless) signals to digital signals, and given the 5G characteristic of utilizing a wide frequency bandwidth of several hundred MHz, the transmission capacity (bandwidth) of optical cables cannot accommodate the entire 5G data.

KT Partners with Seoul City to Support Summer Livelihood for Single-Room Dwelling Residents
KT announced on the 22nd that it held a 3rd anniversary commemoration event at the Dongja Hope Sharing Center located in Yongsan-gu. The event was attended by KT Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu, Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon, Director Jung Su-hyun of the Seoul Station Single-Room Dwelling Counseling Center, and approximately 100 residents of the Dongja-dong single-room dwelling area. After the commemoration ceremony, Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu and Mayor Park Won-soon personally visited single-room dwelling households to distribute low-power compact refrigerator-warmers. The refrigerator-warmer has an 18-liter capacity and was selected as a support item considering the characteristics of narrow single-room dwellings and the burden of electricity bills. Approximately 35% of single-room dwelling households in Seoul had been living without refrigerators even during hot weather due to limited space and concerns about electricity costs. KT and Seoul City will distribute refrigerator-warmers to a total of approximately 1,100 households in single-room dwelling areas not only in Dongja-dong but also in Donui-dong, Dongdaemun, Namdaemun, and Yeongdeungpo regions.

KT, Use Customer Center App as Chatbot
KT announced on the 23rd that the number of users for "Talk Search," an artificial intelligence (AI)-based function that KT introduced first among domestic telecommunications companies in October of last year through its customer service app, has increased more than twofold, surpassing 700,000 monthly users. "Talk Search" is a chatbot function with Korean language processing technology that KT independently developed and holds domestic patents for. Combined with KT's big data analysis techniques and extensive knowledge database, it can accurately understand and process customer intentions. Through the KT customer service app, customers can receive guidance via chatbot conversations for tasks such as viewing billing statements, checking usage, and changing account ownership. For example, users can receive consultations using everyday sentences or phrases such as "What should I do if I have difficulty using my mobile phone due to military enlistment?" or "When does my mobile phone contract period end?"

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
