Addition of next-generation e-reader products and cost-effective dual-core devices

LAS VEGAS (2012 INTERNATIONAL CES) – January 9, 2012 – Freescale’s top-tier i.MX 6 Series single, dual, and quad-core compatible application processors have secured strong market recognition across various application fields in less than six months since their initial unveiling. To expand on this trend, Freescale today announced two new i.MX 6 Series products that offer an attractive combination of performance and density for most of the world’s fastest-growing consumer electronics markets.

The new i.MX 6 SoloLite processor is specifically designed for next-generation e-readers and is the successor to the successful Freescale i.MX508 device currently used in millions of e-readers from top OEMs worldwide. Freescale’s new dual-core i.MX 6 DualLite is a solution that provides multiprocessing performance at a cost-effective price point, targeting a wide range of smart devices and products such as tablets, IPTVs, IP phones, medical patient monitoring systems, and home energy management solutions.

Both processors integrate ARM® Cortex™-A9 cores and E-ink controllers, enabling customers to develop e-readers and tablets simultaneously and achieve rapid time-to-market. The new processors are software compatible with other i.MX 6 series devices, allowing designers to use a common platform to develop “mid-range, high-end, and top-tier” end-product versions. This scalability enables the rapid development of a complete end-product portfolio that is adaptable and expandable to meet changing market demands and requirements.

Strong market recognition of the i.MX 6 series
Exceptional scalability, comprehensive product life extension programs, and a wide variety of peripheral options are the reasons why the i.MX 6 series products have been widely adopted in various markets. Currently, 25 contracts are in progress, and the i.MX 6 processor is being incorporated into designs by five of the top six e-leader OEMs and numerous tablet manufacturers. Other recent design adoptions of the i.MX 6 series processor include airline seatback infotainment systems, next-generation medical equipment, displays for test and measurement equipment, and advanced military and aerospace communication systems.

The new addition to the ever-expanding i.MX 6 series provides the features that have been the hallmarks of the Freescale i.MX family, such as low-power operation, cost efficiency, massive processing headroom, and excellent compatibility.

Building on the successful position of Freescale's i.MX508 processor in the e-reader market, the single-core i.MX 6SoloLite product integrates an ARM Cortex-A9 core operating at up to 1 GHz, a 2D graphics processor, and a display controller for EPD and LCD panels. The i.MX 6SoloLite also features a simplified power management structure that will be integrated into the entire i MX 6 series, which reduces design time and optimizes power efficiency, ultimately allowing for even longer battery life for the e-reader.

The new dual-core i.MX 6DualLite, offering software and pin compatibility with the i.MX 6Quad, i.MX 6Dual, and i.MX 6Solo products, presents an optimal balance of performance, power, and price, enabling consumer and industry customers to develop a wide range of smart device families. Composed of two ARM Cortex-A9 cores operating at up to 1GHz, an integrated 2D and 3D graphics processor, and a 1080p video processing engine, the i.MX 6DualLite delivers exceptional multimedia performance. The highly integrated i.MX 6DualLite supports HDMI, LVDS, MIPI, and PCIe, and features a 64-bit DDR3/LVDDR3 memory interface operating at up to 800MT/s, providing rich connectivity and high performance.
