KT Hosts Drone Racing Championship

Five of Korea's top players, including Kim Min-chan and Son Young-rok, recognized internationally, engage in a heated match.
KT is hosting the 'KT Drone Racing Championship' at RoboUniverse, which is being held at KINTEX in Ilsan on the 29th and 30th.
The KT Drone Racing Championship will be held over two days in a league format with a total of seven rounds, and the final winner will receive a prize of 3 million won. All five participants in this competition are top-tier drone racers with award-winning experience both domestically and internationally, and they are drawing attention as they are expected to lead the future of drone racing in Korea.
Kim Min-chan and Son Young-rok, members of the KT drone racing team GiGA5, took first and second place respectively at last year's 'Korea Drone Racing Ranking Competition' and are known as top-tier drone racing athletes for winning international competitions in Dubai and Shanghai. Additionally, Kim Min-chan and Son Young-rok served as speakers on drone racing under the theme 'Young Drone' at a conference held at RoboUniverse on the 29th.
KT held a 'Drone Academy' prior to the Drone Racing Grand Finals to promote drone racing through explanations of how to control racing drones and the aircraft models. In addition, a time was arranged for any visitor to experience racing drones firsthand, which proved popular.
Now in its third year, 'RoboUniverse' is an event co-hosted by Rising Media of the United States and KINTEX, where visitors can experience a variety of technologies in one place, including robotics and intelligent systems, which are core technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Additionally, conferences on various topics such as artificial intelligence, drones, robots, and AR/VR will be held, featuring over 50 speakers from 10 countries.
KT Executive Vice President Hong Jae-sang said, “The status of domestic drone racing is rising as the KT drone racing team, Giga Five, achieves a winning streak in international competitions,” adding, “Going forward, KT will continue innovative sports marketing as the ‘No. 1 Drone Company in Korea’ by hosting the world’s largest international competitions and drone racing ranking tournaments.”

KT Takes One Step Closer to Revitalizing the Drone Industry
KT announced on the 28th that it has been selected as a joint research institution for the "Development and Demonstration Test of Low-Altitude Traffic Management System for Drone Operations" project under the Korea Agency for Infrastructure Technology Advancement (KAIA), which is supervised by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and has signed agreements with the Aviation Safety Technology Institute and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. Once the "low-altitude unmanned aircraft traffic management" platform is developed, an accident and disaster prevention management system will be established to address drone-to-drone collisions, drone-to-building collisions, privacy invasion caused by illegal drones, and terrorism. By 2021, KT plans to research and develop the "low-altitude unmanned aircraft traffic management (UTM: Unmanned aerial system Traffic Management)" system and technologies to support and manage public and private unmanned aircraft operating at altitudes of 150 meters or below in a safe and efficient manner, thereby contributing to the revitalization of the domestic unmanned aircraft industry.

[Just Try It Out] After Watching a Drone Battle, I Tried Piloting a Drone Myself
If the aircraft crashes to the ground due to collision with another aircraft and cannot resume flight, it's a K.O. If the aircraft cannot fly due to a malfunction before the match starts, it's a TKO. Penalties are imposed if a participant avoids engagement without attacking. After the round ends, penalty recovery can also result in a judgment victory. If ground combat between robots is BattleBots, then aerial combat is "Drone Clash." On the 23rd (Friday), drones clashed at the COEX Smart Tech Show. "Please pay attention. The match can end the moment of collision." Along with the announcer's commentary, participants took the stage. It was a showdown between drone developers. Participant Park Ho-jun, holding a lightsaber, appeared with an LED-decorated drone called "Fancy Fox." His opponent, Hyung Myung-gil, calmly took the stage with his drone "Striker." Next time, I will build the aircraft for combat and challenge again," throwing down the gauntlet, and Hyung Myung-gil responded with, "I'll be waiting anytime."
