New PLL Synthesizer, Achieving Optimal Flexibility and Phase Noise Performance
Composed of a low-noise digital PFD, precision charge pump, and programmable reference divider
- Suitable for telecommunications infrastructure base stations, pulse and Doppler radar applications, test and measurement equipment, microwave point-to-point systems, PMR, VSAT, aerospace systems, etc.
January 12, 2012 – Analog Devices ( www.analog.com ), a global leader in the high-performance semiconductor industry for signal processing applications and a leading supplier of Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits (RFICs), announced today the release of two new PLL synthesizers that provide superior flexibility and phase-noise performance. The ADF4151 and ADF4196 PLL synthesizers facilitate design in a wide range of applications, including telecommunications infrastructure base stations, pulse and Doppler radar applications, test and measurement equipment, microwave point-to-point systems, Professional Mobile Radio (PMR), Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT), and aerospace systems.
Using the ADF4151 with an RF bandwidth of 3.5 GHz, fractional-N or integer-N PLL synthesizers can be implemented. This product consists of a low-noise digital phase frequency detector (PFD), a precision charge pump, and a programmable reference divider, and is pin-compatible and software-compatible with ADI’s ADF4350 4.4 GHz PLL, which is currently widely used in the industry. When these two PLLs are used together, the ADF4151 not only facilitates the use of an external voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), but also enables significant improvement in phase noise without major modifications to the board.
ADF4151 Fractional/Integer Dispensing PLL Synthesizer Key Specifications:
• 3~3.6 V power supply
• 1.8V logic compatibility
• Tuning voltage extension from 3V systems (up to 5V) via a separate charge pump supply
• Programmable dual modulus prescaler (4/5 or 8/9)
• Programmable RF output phase
• 3-Wire Serial Interface
The ADF4196 is a 6 GHz fractional divider PLL with extremely fast stabilization times, specifically designed to meet GSM/EDGE phase-lock time requirements for communications infrastructure and pulse Doppler radar applications. When used with an external loop filter and VCO, the ADF4196 PLL can achieve a phase-lock time of less than 5 µs. This product consists of a low-noise digital PFD and a precision differential charge pump.
ADF4196 Fractional Dispenser PLL Synthesizer Key Specifications:
• Frequency hopping speed in GSM band: less than 5µs (Phase stabilization time: less than 20µs)
• Phase error of 1 rms at 4 GHz RF output
• Digitally programmable output phase
• 3-Wire Serial Interface
• On-chip low-noise differential amplifier
• Phase Noise Performance Figure: 216 dBc/Hz
The ADF4151 and ADF4196 PLLs are supported through a new version of ADIsimPLL™, a comprehensive PLL synthesizer design and simulation tool.
