DigiEco Selects 14 Summer Books Related to Economics and ICT
Published2017.07.11 10:41The KT Economic and Management Research Institute selects and announces recommended books worth reading during the summer vacation season every year. For the 2017 recommendations, all researchers at the KT Economic and Management Research Institute and members of the ICT knowledge portal 'Digieco (www.digieco.co.kr)' participated in selecting a total of 14 books, with 7 books each in the fields of economics and management and ICT convergence.
This year's recommended books in the economics and business sector are predominantly those that sound a warning against conventional corporate management practices. Books on innovation strategies covering topics not traditionally addressed in the field, such as failure case studies and leisure culture, have also been selected and are drawing attention. Additionally, marketing books on social influence that are easy to read while on vacation have been included.
Compared to last year's recommendations, the recommended books in the ICT convergence field focused on businesses linked to ICT, with a large number of books selected related to the 'Fourth Industrial Revolution,' which is a key topic of discussion. Representative examples include 'The Identity of the Inevitable Future' related to future prospects, 'The Fourth Wave Is Coming' focusing on the economy and capital, and 'The Future of the Korean-style Fourth Industrial Revolution' based on 5G infrastructure.
Books selected for future business include 'Next Mobile: The Autonomous Driving Revolution,' which covers the new definition and evolution of automobiles; 'The Impact of Blockchain,' which covers core technologies of the smart finance and fintech markets; and 'Platform Revolution,' which deals with everything from the concept of platforms to business opportunities. Also included is '100 Technologies That Will Change the World,' a trend book that allows readers to easily grasp the advancements in cutting-edge technologies that will be experienced in the near future.
Park Dae-soo, Executive Vice President and Head of the KT Economic and Management Research Institute, stated, “We selected books based on the latest publications released in the first half of the year that are enjoyable to read during summer vacation.” He added, “This year’s selections mainly consist of content related to sector-specific outlooks of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and opportunities in future ICT businesses. Meanwhile, amidst the anxiety of a continuing era of low growth, many books dealing with innovation and strategies different from the past were also selected, reflecting the atmosphere of a strong desire for ‘change’ across society.”

How far should humans go in their efforts for artificial intelligence?
Digiceo released a report on the theme of "Evolution of Crowdsourcing Platforms for Artificial Intelligence." It stated that in the United States, the highest-earning workers are artificial intelligence engineers, machine learning engineers, and data scientists in that order, and that companies are actively engaged in developing algorithms for machine learning targeting unstructured data. The algorithms developed in this manner require extensive additional training to achieve desired results. Similarly, obtaining desired results in any given field depends on the quantity and quality of training data. Tens of millions of vast amounts of data must be individually classified by people, and results necessary for training must be entered manually.

Siri and Bixby, what does the future of artificial intelligence hold?
DigiEco compared artificial intelligence assistants Bixby and Siri on smartphones and predicted the future of artificial intelligence. When Siri was initially introduced, the public did not highly regard artificial intelligence, but as more data accumulated, it produced better results. According to a DigiEco report, Apple enabled users to have everyday conversations with Siri such as jokes or singing, but limited emotions and responses to prevent sustained and emotional interaction. This can be interpreted as Apple being cautious about the rapid development of artificial intelligence potentially causing user rejection or excessive engagement. In March of this year, Samsung Electronics unveiled Bixby, a deep learning-based assistant app. Unlike competing services, it can utilize multiple input methods together such as touch, voice, and camera capture. This represents a step forward compared to competing services that remain mere 'voice' assistant systems. So in what direction will these smartphone artificial intelligence services develop in the future? Beyond improving completeness and adding features, is fundamental innovation possible? Looking at the example of intelligent speakers, there is a high possibility of development moving toward a stage of proposing and acting autonomously rather than simply executing human commands. Artificial intelligence can be divided into weak artificial intelligence, which merely creates simple characters, and strong artificial intelligence, capable of performing unintended driving or solving quizzes without being instructed. Looking at Japan's Gate Box, it wakes users up in the morning with tone and emotion similar to humans. It greets the user first and searches for weather information in advance. And on the way to work, it proactively says things like "bring an umbrella." The emotional intelligence of AI can make users engage with such services more frequently and feel a sense similar to interacting with a real person. Additionally, within certain limitations, it becomes possible for the AI to search for and inform users of morning weather information without being commanded, or to introduce new products at shopping malls in advance. In the future, artificial intelligence could also develop in the form of being raised, similar to 'Tamagotchi.' Depending on how the user cares for it from the egg stage, the hatched organism differs, and its personality varies depending on how it is raised. DigiEco states, "Most scientists believe that strong artificial intelligence will emerge within 50 or 100 years. While artificial intelligence reaching science fiction movie levels may be a distant future, strong artificial intelligence services to be introduced through smartphones are technically feasible and are expected to be realized in the near future."

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
