OpenStack has now evolved into a platform capable of managing containers.

'OpenStack Day 2017,' jointly hosted by the OpenStack Foundation and the OpenStack Korea Community, was held on the 13th at the Lotte Hotel in Jamsil. This event, marking its fourth year, is part of an effort to widely promote OpenStack in Korea and revitalize the related ecosystem.

Under the theme 'OpenStack Next: Embracing the Cloud Universe,' this event covered the open cloud infrastructure that OpenStack will build by integrating with other open source technologies such as storage and containers.

Jonathan Bryce, Executive Director of the OpenStack Foundation, stated, “The global trend is that an increasing number of technologies are being developed using open source. Technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning often start with OpenStack,” adding, “It is an interesting time from a technological perspective.” "It is meaningful that benefits can be provided to anyone, not just specific companies or countries," he said.

Previously, OpenStack was considered the exclusive property of large corporations, but it is now being used regardless of organizational size. According to the OpenStack Foundation, 28% of companies using OpenStack have fewer than 100 employees, while 25% have more than 10,000 employees. It was also revealed that 50% of Fortune 100 companies operate using OpenStack.

Jonathan Bryce stated that he identified key tasks at this year's summit in Boston. "First, we need to simply define what OpenStack is. Next, we need to strengthen feedback loops. It is necessary for developers to offer suggestions when they encounter issues while using the software and have them reflected," he explained. "We also need to mitigate complexity. There are currently 60 to 70 million lines of code. Now is the time to prioritize and focus. We must strengthen collaboration with the surrounding community and discover new leaders to achieve sustainable growth."

Pointing out that adoption patterns are changing as OpenStack technology matures, he said, “In the first generation, the problem was that the technology was difficult to use. Now, in the second generation, the problem is culture and processes. The issue now is that the cloud is not simply providing IT, but changing the culture.”

Red Hat Manager Brendan Paget added that the reason for adopting OpenStack is “because we do not want vendor lock-in and want innovative speed.”

Brendan Paget said, “The most important thing in OpenStack is not technology, but people.” "Companies that have successfully implemented OpenStack focused on people," he said, suggesting a method for successfully adopting OpenStack. "You must understand how OpenStack changes the work environment. When deploying from the initial stages, you must involve affected stakeholders in decision-making." He also added that there is a shortage of key personnel at customers and partners, emphasizing the need to secure competent talent.

NetApp Director Nigel Lee also emphasized the manpower shortage, stating, “Data is becoming the currency of the digital world, and time-to-market has become important. Data is dynamic because it is decentralized and has diverse sources of inflow. It is difficult to manage because it comes in various forms, such as structured and unstructured. It needs to be managed well, but there is a shortage of talent. It is difficult to secure application developers.”

On the second day of the two-day event, Ceph Day and Container Day will be held simultaneously to focus on storage and container technologies, and various hands-on sessions on Kubernetes and OpenStack are scheduled.
