January 18, 2012, Seoul — STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM), a global semiconductor company in various electronic device applications and the leader in Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) for electronic and mobile devices, has launched a new inertial module in a 3x5.5x1mm ultra-small package integrating linear and angular motion 3-axis sensors. ST’s new 6 Degrees of Freedom (DOF) iNEMO module, which is about 20% smaller than models currently in production, provides advanced motion sensing performance for space-constrained consumer applications such as smartphones, tablets, and other portable electronic devices, and is expected to enable the production of thinner products in the future.

ST's latest iNEMO module enhances user experience and the realism of motion detection through space saving, advanced design, and real-time sensor data fusion capabilities. The module's design enables precise alignment of the two sensor reference axes, as well as excellent temperature and mechanical stability. ST's iNEMO engine data fusion software employs sophisticated prediction and filtering algorithms that automatically correct errors and inaccurate measurements.

The LSM330D multi-sensor module incorporates a user-selectable full-scale acceleration range of 2 to 16 g and an angular velocity measurement sensing range of 250 to 2000 dps along the pitch, roll, and yaw axes. This module, which solves the power constraint problem of battery-powered portable devices, includes two built-in FIFO (first-in first-out) memory blocks for each sensor, power saving mode and standby mode for smart power management. It can also operate at any supply voltage within the range of 2.4 to 3.6V.

The new iNEMO module is software compatible with ST's latest 3-axis digital accelerometer, the LIS3DH, and gyroscope, the L3GD20. It also enables customers using ST's single-function sensors to easily enhance their designs and simplifies board size, the number of external components, and the overall application system.

The LSM330D, the smallest 6-degrees-of-freedom (DOF) device in ST's iNEMO inertial module family, is currently available as an engineering sample.
