Accelerating the Robot Business by Expanding Pilot Services

LG Electronics is accelerating the expansion of its robotics business by launching a commercial robot pilot service at Incheon International Airport.

LG Electronics has deployed five cleaning robots and five guide robots at Incheon International Airport and has begun a pilot service. LG Electronics' guide robots and cleaning robots will roam throughout the airport, providing guidance services to passengers and cleaning indoor spaces. This service is part of Incheon International Airport's Smart Airport service initiative.

LG Electronics signed a robot service agreement with Incheon International Airport Corporation in July of last year and has been conducting field tests with its self-developed robots at the airport since February of this year. Over the past five months, the robots have been adapting to variables such as noise, obstacles, and unexpected situations, and have been working to improve their performance.

LG Electronics plans to actively expand its commercial robotics business, starting with airport robots. Earlier this year, it announced its intention to foster the robotics business as a future growth engine.

LG Electronics is conducting research and development by dividing its robot business into ▲household robots such as hub devices that connect with smart home appliances and home robot vacuum cleaners, and ▲commercial robots that help customers in public places such as airports and banks.

Since launching the first robot vacuum cleaner in Korea in 2003, LG Electronics has steadily developed autonomous driving and control technologies for robots. Additionally, LG Electronics is accumulating related technologies in various fields, including natural language processing technology in the voice recognition field and DeepThinQ, a deep learning technology developed independently in the artificial intelligence field.

Song Dae-hyun, President and Head of LG Electronics' H&A Business Division, emphasized, "Starting with the robot pilot service at Incheon International Airport, we will gradually expand our robot business area," and "We will lead the upcoming era of the 4th Industrial Revolution through continuous research and development."
