BUILD Reveals Offering NFC Solution for Windows 8-Based Tablets
September 19, 2011, Seoul – NXP Semiconductors (NASDAQ: NXPI) announced today that its PN544 NFC (Near Field Communication) controller will support Windows 8. NXP has worked very closely with Microsoft to develop NFC for Windows 8, which can expand the use of NFC that operates via proximity or a simple 'tap'. NXP also stated that the Windows 8-based tablet showcased at the Microsoft BUILD conference, held in Anaheim, California from September 13 to 16, is equipped with an NFC solution.
NFC technology is highly convenient and enables interaction with others or objects, such as tags, labels, and posters, through touch-enabled tablets, laptops, PCs, smartphones, and other computing devices. Beyond connecting to Bluetooth headsets or speakers or sharing files between devices with a single tap—similar to "tap to connect" or "tap to share"—various other use cases are possible. NFC also allows for transferring control from one device to another, such as switching from a video call on a tablet to another NFC-enabled device. NFC is a unique feature that connects the real world with the cloud, enabling tablets to interact with smart posters or other devices equipped with NFC tags.
Developers and computing equipment manufacturers will leverage Windows 8 support for NFC to provide various use cases for general consumers and businesses. For example, it may be possible to provide promotions, coupons, or discount codes via NFC tags or posters, create physical touch points on online social media to enhance the check-in experience, add NFC-based game currency to enhance the gaming experience, or deliver content in the form of documents, voice, or video.
Aidan Marcuss, Senior Director of Windows Product Management at Microsoft, stated, “NXP is already a proven technology leader in near-field communication, and we have collaborated closely with NXP on the development of NFC solutions. NXP has a deep understanding of NFC, and we are working together to provide the right hardware, software, and support to deliver this technology to consumers, partners, and developers.”

ST Launches 75V Drive IC Targeting 48V Industrial Motor Driving
ST Microelectronics has unveiled the 'STSPIN9P' series of 75V motor drive ICs tailored for 48V-class industrial drive system design.
