Silicon wafer shipments increased in the second quarter as well.
Published2017.07.25 09:44It was revealed that wafer shipments in the second quarter of 2017 showed an increasing trend, following the first quarter.
In its recent quarterly report on the global wafer industry, SEMI announced that silicon wafer shipments in the second quarter of this year increased compared to the first quarter of 2017.
Silicon area shipments in the second quarter of 2017 totaled 2.978 billion square inches, up 4.2% from 2.858 billion square inches in the first quarter. Shipments in the second quarter of this year increased by 10.1% compared to the same period in 2016. This quarterly figure broke the record set in the first quarter once again, setting a new record high.
Chungwei Lee, Chairman of SEMI’s Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) and VP of Global Wafer, stated, “Global quarterly silicon wafer shipments have broken records for four consecutive quarters,” adding, “This increase in shipments is due to increased demand for both 200mm and 300mm wafers.”

Silicon wafers are the fundamental material for semiconductors and are a core component of almost all electronic devices, including computers, communication products, and home appliances. Thin-film, circular disc-shaped silicon wafers, which require advanced technology, are manufactured in various sizes (diameters from 1 inch to 12 inches) and are used as substrate materials for most semiconductor devices and chip fabrication.

First quarter silicon wafer shipments showed continued growth compared to the previous quarter. According to the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) global wafer industry quarterly report, silicon wafer shipments for the first quarter of this year increased 3.4% compared to the fourth quarter of 2016.

The Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) announced global semiconductor equipment shipments for 2017 at SEMICON West. Global semiconductor equipment sales in 2017 are projected to reach $49.4 billion, representing a 19.8% increase compared to 2016 ($41.2 billion). The $49.4 billion in sales exceeds the previous record high of $47.7 billion achieved in 2000. 2018 is expected to reach $53.2 billion, a 7.7% increase from 2017. SEMI forecasted that wafer processing equipment in 2017 will increase by 21.7% to $39.8 billion, while other front-end equipment sectors including fab facilities, wafer manufacturing, and mask/reticle will increase by 25.6% to $2.3 billion. Assembly and packaging equipment is expected to increase by 12.8% to $3.4 billion, and test equipment is projected to increase by 6.4% to $3.9 billion.
