January 26, 2012 – Linear Technology Korea (CEO Hong Sa-kwak) announced the development of a dual independent-channel, step-up DC/DC converter (product name: LT8582) capable of providing integrated fault protection against output short circuits, input/output overvoltage, and overtemperature conditions. Each channel of the LT8582 utilizes two integrated 42V switches: a 1.7A master switch and a 1.3A slave switch are bundled together to provide a total current limit of 3A. Operating from an input voltage range of 2.5V to 22V and offering transient protection up to 40V, the LT8582 is suitable for applications with diverse input sources, ranging from single-cell lithium-ion to automotive inputs. The LT8582 is ideal for many local power supply designs, as each channel can be individually configured as a boost, SEPIC, inverting, or flyback converter. This product minimizes solution costs while providing a very compact footprint by using a 4mm x 7mm DFN package and ultra-small external components.
The LT8582's low VCESAT switch at 0.27V (coupled at 2.75A) can provide up to 90% efficiency. The Power Good pin enhances usability when event-based sequencing is required. For high-voltage outputs, the LT8582's slave switch is highly efficient and implements a high-power charge pump topology that requires almost no external components. The LT8582's switching frequency can be programmed via a single resistor or synchronized with an external clock within the 200kHz to 2.5MHz range, minimizing external component size and avoiding noise-sensitive frequency bands. Undervoltage lockout (UVLO) is user-adjustable for optimal system performance. Each channel requires a single feedback resistor for output voltage setting, further minimizing the use of external components. Other features include external synchronization, output short-circuit protection, and frequency foldback.
The LT8582EDKD is available in a 7mm x 4mm DFN-24 package and is priced at $3.75 per unit for 1,000 units. The industrial temperature (-40°C to 125°C) version, the LT8582IDKD, is priced at $4.13 per unit for 1,000 units. Both versions are available for immediate purchase.
