MSP430 MCU Provides Flexible Solutions for Next-Generation Single-Phase and Energy Monitoring Applications
New ultra-low power device, enhanced LCD display and high-precision measurement function and
Provides support for advanced weighing software
TI Korea ( www.ti.com/ww/kr ) January 30, 2012 – TI has announced the MSP430F673x/F672x family of ultra-low-power 16-bit microcontrollers, enabling greater flexibility for developers in electric metering and energy monitoring applications. TI’s new devices are backup-capable microcontrollers featuring Real-time Clock (RTC) capabilities and power management functions with a main power supply and up to two independent auxiliary power supplies, ensuring no-interruption measurements. Furthermore, the 24 new F673x/F672x devices enable more precise measurement results and stable system solutions through enhanced sampling rates and superior linearity across various operating conditions, including current range and time. These devices are TI’s first 6xx series microcontrollers to offer 24-bit sigma-delta and 320-segment LCD controllers. Compared to previous 160-segment solutions, developers can utilize enhanced segment LCDs with improved programming performance and support more characters on the display, particularly for Asian languages. As part of the MSP430 microcontroller portfolio, the F673x/F672x devices are designed for ultra-low power mode to ensure that the LCD display consumes as little power as possible during operation. MSP430F673x/F672x Microcontroller Tools and Software for Easy Development
TI provides its MSP430 energy library for free to support metering software on the new F673x/F672x devices, enabling customers to easily begin developing utility meter products. Developers can test and experience accuracy results using the single-phase electric meter MSP430F6736 EVM, as well as program and debug F673x/F672x devices using the MSP-TS430PZ100B target board and the MSP-FET430U100B flash emulation tool.
Key Features and Benefits of the MSP430F673x/F672x Product Family
• Programmable gain amplifiers and powerful 24-bit sigma-delta providing less than 0.1% accuracy over a 2400:1 dynamic range enable the F673x/F672x product families to meet Class 0.1 meters and exceed IEC62053/ANSI C12.20 standards.
• Sigma-delta converters provide independent channels for voltage, current, and tamper detection, reducing energy measurement software development and security-related issues.
• The 320-segment LCD driver, which supports segment and blinking control and dual display memory, operates even in 8-MUX mode, enabling support for multiple LCD devices.
• Real-time clock and calendar modes operate with an independent voltage supply equipped with a programmable charging IC for accurate data recording and measurement without data loss.
• Consumes ultra-low power at 1.4μA in standby mode and supports ultra-fast wake-up performance of 3μs or less.
• Developers can easily find the right product for their application using the MSP430 electric metering selection tool.
• Supports instrumentation software measurements such as voltage, energy, and tamper detection with the free MSP430 energy library
