Creating public value through air quality improvement and reduction of social costs using ICT technology

KT and Gwangmyeong City announced on the 28th that they have concluded an 'IoT-based Fine Dust Environmental Improvement Agreement' to systematically address air pollution issues such as fine dust and to enable efficient air quality management in the region.

Through this agreement, KT and Gwangmyeong City, as the first municipal-level local government to do so, will analyze floating populations and fine dust vulnerable areas in Gwangmyeong City and construct an IoT-based air quality monitoring network throughout the city at base stations, telephone booths, utility poles, community centers, and bus stops. Both organizations expect to contribute to creating public value through air quality improvement and reduction of social costs by leveraging ICT technology.

Through this, KT will collect and analyze air quality conditions including fine dust, ultrafine dust, noise, temperature, and humidity 24 hours in real time and provide the data to Gwangmyeong City. Based on data measured from September, Gwangmyeong City will utilize it for analyzing areas where air pollution occurs, performing environmental monitoring tasks on air pollution emission sources, and optimizing the movement routes of fine dust spray trucks.



Additionally, through continuous consultation, both organizations plan to ▲provide real-time fine dust status through App/Web, ▲provide fine dust status maps by region/season/time, ▲enhance fine dust reduction measures through big data analysis, and ▲establish additional installation plans.

Gwangmyeong City Mayor Yang Gi-dae stated, "Fine dust issues are directly related to the lives of citizens, and fine dust reduction policies must be pursued as the top priority," and added, "We will do our best to improve citizens' quality of life by promoting fine dust reduction projects based on objective data grounded in advanced technology."

Kim Hyung-wook, Head of KT's Platform Business Planning Division, said, "KT has been able to provide air quality information to Gwangmyeong citizens using KT's ICT infrastructure and big data to create a Gwangmyeong City where people can feel at ease from the threat of air pollution such as fine dust," and added, "KT will continue to showcase various innovative technologies for people and make efforts to contribute to environmental problem improvement as a national enterprise."
