Samsung Electronics: You can download a 2-hour movie in just 10 seconds
Published2017.07.31 11:12Samsung Electronics is solidifying its technological leadership in the LTE modem market by introducing 1Gbps (Cat.16, download standard) modem technology supporting 5CA (Carrier Aggregation) for the first time in the industry through the launch of Exynos 9 (8895) in February of this year, followed by the development of 6CA modem technology for the first time in the industry.
According to measurements taken with equipment from Anritsu, a Japanese company specializing in telecommunications measurement instruments, Samsung Electronics' 6CA modem technology recorded a maximum download speed of 1.2Gbps (Cat.18), a 20% improvement over the existing model.
A download speed of 1.2 Gbps means that a 2-hour HD movie can be downloaded in about 10 seconds, and through this improvement in modem performance, consumers can smoothly use high-quality data services such as high-definition video calls and watching live broadcasts on their smartphones.
To maximize data transmission speeds, Samsung Electronics applied '4×4 MIMO technology,' which enables the simultaneous use of four antennas each in the base station and terminal, and '256QAM' technology, which processes frequency modulation and demodulation in 8-bit units instead of the existing 6-bit unit (64QAM).all.
In addition, by applying eLAA (enhanced Licensed Assisted Access) technology, which allows the use of parts of unlicensed band frequencies such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth not only for downloads but also for uploads, it enables the efficient utilization of existing frequency resources and equipment owned by telecommunication operators.
Heo Woon-haeng, Senior Vice President of the Development Team at Samsung Electronics’ System LSI Business Division, stated, "Market demand for high-performance LTE modems is continuously expanding due to the expansion of high-quality data content services," and added, "This 6CA 1.2Gbps LTE modem technology is a culmination of Samsung Electronics' System LSI design capabilities and will serve as a cornerstone for securing a leading position in the future 5G market."

KT has extended smartphone battery usage time by up to 45%. KT's battery-saving technology (hereinafter, C-DRX) is a network-based technology rather than a physical increase in battery capacity. While LTE data connection is maintained, the smartphone's communication function is periodically switched to low-power mode to reduce battery consumption. In existing network environments, the modem and base station maintained continuous communication with the communication function kept active. The C-DRX environment reduces unnecessary battery drain by turning off the communication function when transmission and reception are not occurring.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
