VMware provided the desktop and application virtualization solution VMware Horizon to the Gyeongsangbuk-do Office of Education, implementing a digital workspace with enhanced security and improved convenience.

The Gyeongsangbuk-do Office of Education, which oversees education policies and administration in Gyeongsangbuk-do, sought to establish a superior security system capable of protecting critical information about students and schools in response to the recent surge in various security threats. To this end, they adopted VMware Horizon and implemented a virtualization-based logical network segmentation system in collaboration with VMware's partner, IR Company, to simultaneously prevent external security threats and internal information leakage.

VMware Horizon is a solution that provides Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and implements logical network segmentation. It centrally manages necessary images, simplifies tasks, and establishes a secure work environment that complies with security regulations. The Office of Education selected business network segmentation among the logical network segmentation methods, adding approximately 400 virtual desktops and enabling the use of work-related virtual desktops by running applications on a single existing desktop.

The biggest benefit of adopting Horizon is the establishment of a robust security environment capable of responding to the latest security threats, and a digital workspace that allows access to the business network regardless of location. The Office of Education saved all work files from users' desktops to a central server and storage, proactively blocking information leakage to the outside. Even if malware is detected or executed, the system can be restored to a state prior to the suspected infection, enabling effective response to the recently increasing sophisticated security threats. Furthermore, through network segmentation, employees can access virtual desktops and perform work from external computers while on fieldwork or business trips, creating a convenient work environment anytime and anywhere.

Kim Chang-gyu, Head of the Finance and Information Division at the Gyeongsangbuk-do Office of Education, stated, “By introducing logical network segmentation based on virtual desktops, we were able to raise security levels and improve work efficiency,” adding, “Taking this introduction of virtualization as an opportunity, we intend to formulate and implement policies aimed at maximizing security and usability.”
