- Latest Analog Class D High-End Audio Amplifier ∙∙∙ Achieves Record-Breaking 3.2W/mm² Output Density

January 31, 2012, Seoul — STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM), a global semiconductor company in various electronic device applications and a leader in audio ICs, has launched a high-performance analog Class D audio amplifier featuring the industry's highest power density. This enables audio device manufacturers to combine superior audio quality with miniaturization for next-generation home and professional sound systems and active speaker applications.
To maximize speaker output, audio system manufacturers require high-efficiency amplifiers capable of driving speakers at low impedances of 2 or 3 ohms. However, using such amplifiers presented the problem of increasing the size of the device. ST's designers solved this problem by packaging a total output of 320W (160W per channel) into an area of 100mm². ST's new analog audio Class D amplifier achieves a power density 20% higher than existing solutions on the market.
The powerful current supply of this device not only provides high output but also realizes a platform solution design that can change speaker impedance from 8 ohms to 2 ohms without power or current constraints.
ST's latest Class D amplifier includes features designed to enhance the audio quality of end applications, such as built-in click/pop noise suppression, standby and mute functions, and balanced inputs for optimal Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) noise rejection. This device features built-in smart current protection that recognizes which specific frequency bands speakers require maximum current to automatically prevent interference with the sound flow.
The TDA7498E analog Class D amplifier supports both stereo and mono modes, enabling various audio system configurations, and includes a parallel mono function for driving a subwoofer channel in a 2.1 sound setup. It also achieves a signal-to-noise ratio of 100dB and allows selection of fixed gain settings (23.8dB, 29.8dB, 33.3dB, and 35.8dB).
ST's single-power supply TDA7498E dual BTL (Bridge Tied Load) Class D audio amplifier is currently available for sampling and is scheduled for mass production in February 2012. The price is $6 per unit for orders of 1,000, and orders can be placed through the relevant ST sales offices.
