KT, Share Your Ideas for 5G Implementation!

KT is soliciting ideas with a total prize pool of 30 million won to open the '5G era' together with small and medium-sized enterprises and venture companies.
This contest is designed to discover services that provide high value to consumers by combining the characteristics of 5G networks—fast speed, seamless connectivity, and massive capacity—with technologies possessed by small and medium-sized enterprises and venture companies.
Following the world's first 5G trial service in PyeongChang, Gangwon Province in 2018, KT is preparing related services along with network development for the world's first 5G commercialization in 2019. To this end, KT is strengthening collaboration not only with group companies and partners but also with small and medium-sized enterprises and venture companies equipped with technological capabilities.
In March, KT launched 'KT-Eco Alliance,' an open-type technical collaboration body to work across 11 new business sectors including fintech, integrated security, connected cars, artificial intelligence (AI), and big data. Currently, approximately 150 companies are participating in the KT-Eco Alliance. The 5G service contest targets participating companies (member companies) of the KT-Eco Alliance.
For this contest, participants should propose service scenarios by theme in the five categories classified by the 5G Forum: Immersive, Intelligent, Ubiquitous, Autonomous, and Public Service. In detail, creative ideas are welcomed from diverse areas including augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), hologram, robotics, drones, disaster and hazard monitoring, and personal security.
To participate in the contest, submit your service scenario by email (ecoalliance@kt.com) by September 1st by referring to the notices on the KT Partner Portal (partner.kt.com). Even if you are not a KT-Eco Alliance member company, you can participate in the contest by completing the registration review and approval process on the KT Partner Portal.
KT will conduct a first-round document review and second-round presentation review, awarding a total of 30 million won in prizes to 7 companies, including the grand prize of 10 million won. Additionally, apart from prize money, KT plans to actively support the commercialization of 5G-related ideas by providing development funding. Note that the rights to submissions belong to the applicants, and KT has decided to prioritize entering into agreements with applicants for intellectual property acquisition.

KT Leads 4th Industrial Revolution with 5G
KT announced on the 30th that it participated in the "2017 Summer Comprehensive Academic Conference of the Korean Institute of Electronics Engineers," held from June 29 to July 1 at the Grand Hotel in Haeundae, Busan, under the theme of "Smart ICT Technology Creating the Fourth Industrial Revolution." KT Secures 5G Coverage on Ski Jump
KT announced that it successfully completed field testing of a "5G WTTx (Wireless To The x)" solution that secured gigabit internet coverage using 5G at the top of the ski jump at Alpensia Sports Park, where the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics were held. WTTx is a solution that replaces sections where information is transmitted via optical cables with wireless transmission. It has the advantage of being able to provide wireless speeds at gigabit internet levels even in locations and environments where infrastructure construction is difficult.

Communication technology enabling connectivity even on high-speed KTX trains leads 5G standardization
Leading 5G mobile communication standardization with mobile wireless backhaul (MWH) technology successfully demonstrated on moving subway trains. The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced that at an international standardization conference held in Niagara Falls, Canada at the end of last month, it reflected millimeter-wave-based high-speed mobile environment technology in the IMT-2020 evaluation document so that it can be evaluated as a 5G technology. This decision was made at the 27th International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) mobile communication working group meeting promoting standardization.

KT Becomes Chair of GSMA 5G Adoption Project Leading Commercialization
KT announced that Dr. Kim Ha-sung from KT Convergence Technology Institute has been appointed as chairman of the newly established '5G Introduction' project under the Future Networks group of GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association), the world's largest mobile telecommunications operator alliance. The newly established '5G Introduction' project includes participation from not only the three domestic telecommunications carriers but also 15 global telecom operators including NTT Docomo, Deutsche Telekom, China Telecom, and Sprint, as well as global manufacturers such as Nokia, Ericsson, Huawei, and Qualcomm. Going forward, the project plans to take the lead in discussions for early 5G commercialization by developing strategic directions and evolution roadmaps for 5G ahead of global 5G commercial deployment, and publishing reports at MWC 2018 next year.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.
